The Embassy of Japan in New Zealand is currently seeking expressions of interest for Bunkasai – Japanese Cultural Festival, which will be held on Sunday October 18th at the Dominion Museum.

A bunkasai, or cultural festival, is a traditional event held at schools and within local communities across Japan, where people showcase the results of their activities and deepen connections with one another. From haunted houses and food stalls to concerts, exhibitions, and karaoke competitions, participants create, present, and enjoy the festival together. It is a staple of school life in Japan.

Our Bunkasai is a small, community-driven initiative intended to bring together people who are passionate about sharing Japanese culture, creating an event that is shaped by and for the local community. We hope you'll join us to bring this Bunkasai to life in Wellington. We welcome expressions of interest from individuals, businesses, organisations, and community groups whose activities promote, preserve, educate about, or celebrate Japanese culture. Whether through the arts, traditional or contemporary culture, food, language, or other aspects of Japanese cultural heritage, we encourage anyone who shares this focus to apply.

There is no fee to participate in the festival. If you would like to join the event, please complete the form at this link by 5:00pm on September 16.
https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/iKwRUpTMX4
We will review all submissions to determine how they fit within the festival programme, taking into account factors such as the available space, scheduling requirements, and the overall balance of activities. We will then be in touch to let you know the outcome.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We hope you'll consider submitting an expression of interest and look forward to hearing from you.

Join us on 16 August for a special Japanese cultural event alongside the New Zealand International Film Festival, Japan Cinema Day!
Before the screening of the Samurai and the Prisoner, experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony and explore a special exhibition that will enrich your appreciation of the story.

Have you ever wondered:
- What is the connection between the Samurai and the Prisoner and the tea ceremony?
- Who was Araki Murashige?
- What is Itami City, home to the ruins of Arioka Castle, like today?

Our panel exhibition introduces the historical background behind the film and the people and places and would offer a deeper understanding of this fascinating story before the film starts.

At the tea ceremony, come and see a practice that embodies mindfulness, discipline, hospitality, and the art of finding calm even in uncertain times. At the conclusion of the ceremony, you will be invited to enjoy matcha 🍵 prepared by the Omote Senke Sado Club, accompanied by specially crafted Wagashi — traditional Japanese sweets — made by the Ambassador's chef.

Date: Tea Ceremony starts at 6:45 pm on 16th August - Free Admission
Panel Exhibition (all day on 16th) - Free Admission
Venue: Dominion Museum, Massey University
(The same building as the cinema, located at the rear.)
🎬 NZIFF Screening of the Samurai and the Prisoner - ticket holders only
7:45 pm

We look forward to welcoming you for an evening of Japanese history, culture, and cinema!

Could you see yourself as an Assistant Language Teacher or Coordinator of International Relations in Japan next year? 🌏 Applications for the 2027 JET Programme will be opening later this year, so keep an eye out for updates!

Life-sized displays and tiny creations 🍣✨

One of the highlights of our current exhibition is the incredible craftsmanship behind Japan's famous food replicas. But did you know you don't have to be a professional artisan to be inspired by them?

One of our exhibition visitors, Gareth, has been creating miniature food replicas as a hobby for the past two years. After discovering the craft on YouTube, he decided to give it a go, and he's been hooked ever since!

Each miniature takes anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to complete, with Gareth saying the most enjoyable part is the process of bringing each piece together. His finished creations have become quite the collection too, with a wall at home dedicated to displaying them! 🍰🍜🍱

Whether you're fascinated by the history of Japanese food replicas or simply appreciate incredible attention to detail, our exhibition celebrates the artistry behind these remarkably realistic creations. Perhaps it might even inspire you to try making your own.

If you haven't visited yet, we'd love to welcome you! Come and discover the fascinating world of Japanese food replicas at the Japan Information and Cultural Centre. Tomorrow is the last day of the exhibition, so don't miss out!

Do you know chef Keiko Kuwakino?
She is the executive chef of a restaurant in Minamiuonuma, Niigata, and earned one Michelin star in 2020. In Minamiuonuma, she connected with local people and immersed herself in the culture of Japan's snow country. She observed the cycle of nature, from plants sprouting in spring to withering with the seasons, and experienced a way of life that lives in harmony with the natural order. Doesn't that sound like it has something in common with the Māori philosophy of living in harmony with the land?
On 29 August, chef Kuwakino will visit New Zealand to collaborate with Māori chefs at a special culinary event. What kinds of dishes will they create together?
