Thirty years ago this week, Sport NZ and HPSNZ’s current Chair Duane Kale won 6 medals for New Zealand at the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games, setting a record for the most medals won by a New Zealand Paralympian at a single Games.

That record still stands and earlier this week Duane looked back on his 1996 Paralympics performance in a chat with Newstalk ZB’s Jason Pine.

Another great example of sport bringing New Zealand and India together. And much more to come as we count down to November. 🇳🇿🤝🇮🇳

Celebrate with us: https://sportnz.org.nz/about/news-and-media/news-updates/the-countdown-is-on-100-years-of-unity-through-sport/

Ahead of the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, our New Zealand crews have been training at Hazewinkel in Belgium alongside teams from India and Canada.

Yesterday, during a 2km race simulation, the Indian crew jumped in and raced alongside our men’s team. No big plan. No formal arrangement. Just rowers doing what rowers do - training hard, sharing the water and enjoying the sport together.

As we celebrate 100 Years of Unity through Sport, moments like this are a reminder that rowing is about more than what happens on race day. It brings people together, creates friendships and builds connections that reach well beyond the finish line.

A simple training session. A shared stretch of water. A reminder of what sport can do.

Through Mātaiao, kura are helping ākonga connect with te taiao, mātauranga Māori and physical activity as part of everyday learning. Where the approach is well established, ākonga report being more active, more engaged and more connected to their culture. This is a strong example of how learning that reflects local culture, knowledge and place can support ākonga wellbeing, belonging and achievement.

The 2025 Sports Media and Gender Report is out now, showing the latest picture of coverage of women’s sport in sports news media across Aotearoa.

The report also shows women’s sport made up 26% of sports news coverage in 2025, down 1%, from 27% in 2024. However, female visibility increased by 3% to 26%, indicating that although women’s share of coverage fell slightly, more women were featured in sports news.

Women’s sport is happening every week, across Aotearoa. The opportunity is to keep building more consistent coverage year-round.

This week we released the first in our new women and girls spotlight series, focused on participation. The spotlight brings together insights from across play, active recreation and sport, highlighting both progress and ongoing inequities in girls’ and young women's participation.

More than a summary of the evidence, it's a practical resource designed to help organisations and communities reflect on what the findings mean in their context and identify opportunities for action.
