Tēnā koutou e te whānau

With Covid-19 still amongst us and its ever-changing face presenting new challenges to our communities, we have had to learn to adapt when and as needed. It has raised a number of questions around risks for our whānau and what lengths need to be taken to make big events safe for them to attend. Te Konohete has been no exception and, as we saw last year, unfortunately it had to be cancelled.

2021 is looking more promising as we see communities responding quicker to any outbreaks, and the rollout of the new vaccine is beginning. However, the risks are still present, and we are aware that we aren’t out of the woods yet.

Therefore, on behalf of the 2021 Te Konohete Hosting committee (NZ Customs Service Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa, Land Information New Zealand Toitū te whenua (LINZ), Environmental Protection Authority Te Mana Rauhī Taiao (EPA) and Ministry for Primary Industries Manatū Ahu Matua (MPI), the decision has been made to cancel Te Konohete 2021.

The main reason is because of the uncertainties that remain around organising big events in a Covid-19 environment and the response needed if there were an outbreak. Other options were considered but the logistics and financial commitment needed to make those work were well beyond what we could ask any of our organisations to contribute. It was also felt that pūtea could be put towards other priorities in this current climate.

We remain optimistic that Te Konohete can return to us in 2022 as we track the journey of the new vaccine and monitor Covid-19 across the world. Thank you for your continued support.
