The Chief Ombudsman, says a proposal in the Fisheries Amendment Bill to exempt commercial fishing camera footage from release under the Official Information Act is unnecessary and excessive. John made an oral submission on the Bill before Parliament’s Primary Production Committee.

John says the array of measures included in the Bill including carving out fishing camera footage from the OIA aren’t justified because the law already offers protections:

ā€œIn my view, these measures risk undermining the OIA, and lowering trust and confidence in both the fishing industry and in government.ā€

The Office is saddened to hear of the passing of Rt Hon Sir Kenneth Keith ONZ KBE PC KC, one of New Zealand’s most distinguished jurists and public servants.

From 1971 Sir Kenneth was a member of various law and constitutional reform bodies, including the Danks Committee on Official Information. Sir Kenneth was a member and President of the Law Commission, he also sat in appeal courts in Western Samoa, the Cook Islands, Niue, and Fiji. In 2004, he was one of the five original judges appointed to New Zealand’s Supreme Court when it was established. From 2006 to 2015 Kenneth Keith was a judge of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, the first New Zealander to be elected to that body. At the end of that term, he returned to the faculty of law at Victoria University of Wellington.

Our thoughts are with Sir Kenneth Keith’s family and friends, and we thank him for his service to law and to the Danks Committee.
