On 19 August, we mark World Humanitarian Day: a time to honour humanitarian workers and to stand with people affected by crises around the world.
When lives are at risk, the people who come to help should never be targets. Yet humanitarian workers continue to be killed, injured, abducted, detained and obstructed while carrying out their work. Most are national staff serving their own communities.

Christchurch is hosting the Global Cities New Zealand conference on 3rd, 4th and 5th September.
The 'Partnering for Good | City Rebuilding' session will consider how New Zealand cities could partner with appropriate European cities to support Ukraine on locally led rebuilding efforts once the current conflict concludes.
15 years after the devastating earthquakes that hit Christchurch, the city has rebuilt back better. What a gift to be able to share this knowledge with Ukrainian cities devastated by years of Russia's full scale war.

Cities are leading the charge in creating green and prosperous futures. The EU’s International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) project is building a global network of cities and regions collaborating to exchange practical knowledge on how to meet new critical challenges. Through IURC, Christchurch is already engaged with leading cities in Europe, alongside New Zealand's regional participants, Taranaki and Manawatū.

His Excellency Patryk Blaszczak, Ambassador, Embassy of the Republic of Poland and Dr Paul Dalziel, Country Coordinator, European Union’s International Urban and Regional Cooperation Programme will contribute to the conference discussion. Polish Embassy in Wellington

The Global Cities New Zealand National Conference is the country’s premier forum for the sister city movement, bringing together civic leaders, local government decision makers, globally connected businesses, economic development agencies, and members of the diplomatic corps.

The European Union is proud to support the 2026 Climate Change and Business Conference.

As we enter the final stretch to 2030, the impacts of climate change are no longer theoretical, they are shaping the operating environment for businesses today.

The 2026 Climate Change & Business Conference, Building Momentum. Driving Change., will bring together a leading line-up of local and global speakers at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre on 7–8 September to tackle the critical questions of the moment. From geopolitical shocks reshaping energy security, to capturing the upside of the transition and unpacking the true cost of adaptation, this is a critical forum for business leaders, policy makers and sustainability practitioners.

These conversations won't end in September. The themes explored at will also be central to the EU-NZ Cleantech Summit in Christchurch on 4-5 April 2027, where we'll continue the conversation and highlight the increasing importance of international collaboration in accelerating sustainable growth and the transition to a low emissions economy.

Delighted to work with Creative HQ and support the Aurora Climate Tech Summit. Great kĹŤrero on what makes climate tech companies investable and how founders can successfully scale into Europe. We look forward to continuing the conversation at the EU NZ Cleantech Summit in Christchurch on 4&5th April 2027.

Great insights from Ambassador of Spain H.E. Luis Sánchez-Vellisco Sánchez on Spain’s rapid adoption of renewable energy, and how energy policy and climate policy are now converging. Spain will host the Cleantech Forum Europe Retreat on November 16-18.
Bernadette Casey shared her story of setting up in the Netherlands and how Kiwi Cleantech and European support can together develop climate solutions.
Thanks Alice Havill for a great overview the International Cleantech space and how “Europe’s enormous policy tailwind” is driving innovation.
Inspiring pitches from the 15 Cleantech startup in the Aurora Climate Tech accelerator.

European and New Zealand expertise is coming together on one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most significant infrastructure projects. 🇪🇺🇳🇿

The signing of the public–private partnership for the Warkworth to Te Hana section of the Northland Expressway brings Spanish 🇪🇸 firm Acciona into the Northway consortium through Acciona Concesiones SL and Acciona Construction New Zealand Ltd. They will work alongside international investors and New Zealand partners, including Downer New Zealand and AECOM.

This partnership reflects the value of combining local knowledge with international experience in project design, construction, financing and long-term maintenance.

European companies bring deep expertise from delivering complex infrastructure across diverse markets. Working closely with New Zealand partners creates opportunities to share practical approaches, strengthen delivery capability and support projects that are well planned, resilient and focused on long-term value.

The benefits will be felt in safer and more reliable connections, stronger local supply chains, new skills and opportunities, and infrastructure that supports communities and economic growth across Northland.

A strong example of how EU–New Zealand cooperation can translate into practical, lasting impact 🛣️

🗺 Banks Peninsula extends into the Pacific Ocean from the eastern coast of 🇳🇿 New Zealand’s South Island, beside Christchurch, the largest city on the island.

Formed from the eroded remains of two extinct volcanoes, the peninsula has steep ridges, indented bays, and a rugged coastline.

🛰 This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 21 June 2026, shows Banks Peninsula bordered by the turquoise waters of the Pacific. Christchurch is visible to the north-west, while Lake Ellesmere appears to the south-west. To the west, the Canterbury Plains form a patchwork of agricultural fields, contrasting with the peninsula’s steep, hilly interior.

The Sentinel-2 satellites provide high-resolution optical imagery which supports the monitoring of coastal zones, land cover, and vegetation.
