From group chats to gaming to AI chatbots, our tamariki are growing up in a digital world that looks very different from the one we did.

Here’s a few conversation starters to help keep everyone on the same page:

• Ask what apps and games they're using, and who they're talking to

• Agree on privacy settings together, don't just set them

• Make it clear they can come to you if something online upsets them, no judgement

• Know the warning signs of online grooming and where to get help

You don't need to be a tech expert, you just need to stay curious and keep the conversation open.

A joyride through central Wellington on a stolen dirt bike ended abruptly on Monday after the rider crossed paths with an alert on-duty police officer.

The officer was arriving at Police Maritime base on Wellington waterfront when he heard reports of dirt bikers riding erratically on Taranaki Street and heading into the waterfront area. He estimated the riders’ likely route and positioned himself to intercept them if possible.

A short while later, two dirt bikers came toward his position. The officer moved onto the road and signalled the riders to stop. On attempting to U-turn, one of the riders fell from the bike sending it uncontrolled toward bystanders before it instead hit a concrete bollard. The rider absconded on foot after a helpful member of the public tried to assist by attempting to knock him over. The officer ran after him, catching up to and detaining him on Customhouse Quay with the assistance of the Wellington beat team.

Inspector Paul Hamlyn says it was fortunate that no one was injured by the bikers’ behaviour.

ā€œWere it not for the quick actions of the officer, this could have turned out worse. Thankfully, we’re now able to return the $22,000 motorcycle to its owner.ā€

A 31-year-old is due to appear at Wellington District Court on 24 August on charges of unlawfully getting on a motorcycle, driving in a dangerous manner, and failing to stop when required. Further inquiries into the matter are ongoing.

A 54-year-old man has been arrested after attempting to steal copper cable from the rail corridor, damaging the safety signals system.

At about 4am on Friday 3 July, Police received a report about a person unlawfully entering the rail corridor at Takapu Road Station in Tawa, Wellington. A heavy signalling cable was damaged, however the alleged offender left the scene before Police arrived.

The severed cable caused signalling faults which required train services to be suspended while emergency repairs were undertaken.

Wellington Police’s Investigation Support Unit yesterday executed a search warrant at an address in Porirua, and the man was subsequently arrested.

Kāpiti Mana Area Commander RenƩe Perkins says the cost of the damage to the infrastructure is about $3000, but the delay and loss in productivity to early morning commuters cannot be appropriately quantified.

ā€œIt’s very disappointing that people are causing damage to public transport services and are willing to put other people’s lives at risk.ā€

Andy Lyon, KiwiRail General Manager Wellington Metro, says anyone interfering with rail equipment is putting themselves and others at risk of serious harm.

ā€œCopper theft from the rail corridor is extremely serious. As well as posing a significant safety risk, this type of offending can cause delays, additional costs, and disruption to the community.

ā€œWe are grateful to Police for their swift action in making an arrest and will continue to work closely with them on offences of this nature."

The 54-year-old man will appear in Porirua District Court on 2 September on a charge of Endangering Transport.
