Ahi ahi mārie – as you’ll have seen, we’ve got a Severe Thunderstorm Watch from for Auckland, just in time for school pickup and rush hour 😫 (3pm to 8pm today). For our whānau on Aotea Great Barrier, the timing of your watch has changed slightly (5pm to 10 pm).

Some friendly reminders:

☔ Stay alert as we’ve got potential for localised heavy downpours, strong winds and even the low risk of a small tornado. Look out for surface and flash flooding and remember NEVER drive, walk or play in floodwaters.

👍Keep updated with the latest forecast on the MetService website or download the app from Google Play or the App Store. There’s a new feature in the app - you can turn on Severe Weather alerts to now get notifications for ALL watches and warnings. Just go to Notifications > Severe Weather, switch it on, and choose your location.

❗️As always, to report stormwater issues and flooding to the council call 09 301 0101. If your life or property is in danger, call 111 immediately.

Take care out there!

Today we had four firefighters take on the incredible challenge of climbing the Sky Tower for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation, wearing full firefighter gear weighing around 25kgs while tackling 1,103 steps across 51 floors.
A massive acknowledgement to Phil and Trent who between them raised an awesome $3,756 to help support patients and their families/whānau across the country. The funds raised go towards providing information and education sessions, support services, funding for research, raising awareness about these diseases, and advocating on behalf of patients.
An outstanding effort by all involved — you’ve done yourselves, your brigade, and your community proud.

Kia ora everyone, MetService New Zealand has made some updates to today's forecast, mainly around the timing of warnings for Auckland and Aotea Great Barrier Island. Follow MetService for updates or download the Metservice App from the App Store or Google Play.

The current track of Cyclone Vaianu can be found at www.metservice.com/warnings/tropical-cyclone-activity

📍Aotea Great Barrier Island has been upgraded to a RED warning for wind. The combination of damaging winds, heavy rain and coastal inundation makes this a multi-hazard, potentially life-threatening event.
📍The locations of the most severe impacts associated with Cyclone Vaianu, such as power outages, falling trees, flooding, slips, road closures and isolated communities are highly dependent on the cyclone's track.
📍Strong Wind and Heavy Rain Watches and Warnings are in force for much of the North Island and upper South Island Sunday and early Monday. Further areas are likely to be upgraded to Orange or Red as the cyclone approaches and its track becomes clearer.

Forecast: Severe gale easterlies changing to severe gale west to northwesterly Sunday afternoon, with damaging gusts of 130km/h. Note winds easing from the north during Sunday afternoon.

Area: Auckland
Period: 20hrs from 10.00pm Sat to 6:00pm Sun

Kia ora Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland – here’s the first update from MetService New Zealand about Cyclone Vaianu heading our way.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

At this stage, uncertainty remains in the cyclone’s exact track, and its potential impacts. We can however possibly expect damaging, potentially life-threatening winds, heavy rain, and hazardous coastal conditions.

This could cause damage to trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures. Driving may be difficult, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.

CURRENT FORECAST:

Strong Wind Watch - Yellow
Area: The North Island
Period: 22hrs from 1:00am Sunday 12 April to 11:00pm Sunday 12 April

Forecast: Cyclone Vaianu is likely to move across the North Island on Sunday, 12 April. potentially bringing damaging, life-threatening winds.

As confidence in the path it will take increases, parts of this Watch will be upgraded to Orange or possibly Red Warnings. Vaianu will also bring heavy rain, with Heavy Rain Watches and/or Warnings likely to be issued on Thursday for some areas. High chance of upgrading to a Warning.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW:

➡️ Keep up-to-date with the weather by downloading the MetService app from the App Store or Google Play, or visit www.metservice.com

➡️ Start preparing your property - check your drains and gutters to ensure they aren’t blocked. These can cause flooding issues during heavy rain. Clear any tree branches, leaves and debris that can cause blockages. Put away or tie down any loose outdoor furniture and trampolines in case of high winds.

➡️ Get ready in case of power outages. Check you’ve got a torch and batteries, keep your phone and power banks charged and have a battery-operated radio (or your car radio as an alternative).

We’ll keep you updated as things progress over the next few days and also provide details on how Auckland Council is getting ready too.
