G A R D E N T O T A B L E | πŸŒ±πŸ§πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ Over the past couple of weeks, Tomarata School has rebooted our Garden 2 Table programme. So many students have signed up to participate, showing us that there is a real enthusiasm for this kind of hands on learning.
Last week, one group worked to create grapefruit muffins, while another constructed a compost bin.
Today, one group was busy cooking muffins while another started up a worm farm. Thank you Sascha for the worms!!
Firstly, we did a worm hunt in the garden to see how many worms we could find. We only managed to find one. This shows us that we need to get more organic matter into our garden beds. Hopefully over the coming months, our compost and worm farm will help lift the quality of the soil, leading to some awesome growing over summer.
It is so much fun being out and about in the garden with students, and I know that they are loving the opportunity to do cooking at school as well.
A huge thank you to all of the parents who have indicated that they can help with this programme, and a shout out to Aimee for taking on the leadership of G2T at Tomarata School! πŸ˜€πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘

S U S T A I N A B I L I T Y C H A L L E N G E M U R I W A I | πŸ¦‰πŸŒ³πŸŒ€οΈ On Friday, 8 Tomarata School students took part in the 2026 Sustainability Challenge at Muriwai. It was a big event, with 46 teams competing. The event is aimed at getting young people active, at the same time as educating them about sustainability, how to protect our environment from pests, the carbon cycle, what the future might look like, how to recycle, identifying native birds etc. We even did some work to help develop a track into the bush at Muriwai.
It was really inspiring to see our students work so well together, take turns, share ideas, help out, and support each other to keep going when our legs got tired. Well done everyone.
A big thank you to Camilla who came along to help as well. We can't do these kinds of days without parent support, so nga mihi nui!
Out of the 46 teams, one of our teams came in 12th equal place, and the other in 19th place. Really good results!
I'll try to add more photos to this as I get them.
Well done everyone involved! πŸ¦‰πŸŒ³πŸŒ€οΈ

M A T A R I K I C E L E B R A T I O N | ✨πŸ”₯✨ Yesterday was our third annual Matariki celebration at Tomarata School. It was an amazing day or togetherness for our school community. There are so many people to thank for bring this event together...
-The staff and students of Tomarata School
-The Tomarata School PTA
-Hangi master, Josh!
New World Mangawhai -for helping out with our groceries
Mānuka Wood Supply -for donating the manuka for the hangi

We started the day at 6am, with a powhiri and the lighting of the hangi fire. It was a cold and clear morning with a good turn out from our community. The fires burned for three and a half hours before the kai baskets were placed into the hangi pit. By 12.30 the food was ready, and cooked to perfection under the watchful eye of Josh.
The addition of fry bread, and steamed pudding completed the feast.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped out, and came along to celebrate this significant event.😍

T R E E S F O R S U R V I V A L |🌳🌱🌳Yesterday Room 7 took part in our annual planting day for Trees for Survival, with Frankie. This year, we partnered with the farm that is just next to school, so we were able to walk to the planting site. It was a beautiful day, with conditions perfect for planting.
Room 7 managed to plant around 600 native plants along a section that boarders a stream. Well done to the students and staff who helped make it such a great day out. Also, a big thank you to Cam for putting on a sausage sizzle with sausages donated by Matakana Butchery.

A huge thank you to our amazing PTA for setting up the hall, and going to a lot of effort to prepare and sell food at the event. A big thank you also goes to our teachers and teacher aides who helped make sure that the event ran so smoothly.
It was a great night, with lots of happy children enjoying their favourite songs, dancing, and having fun with their friends and families.

B O O K W E E K| πŸ“•πŸ“—πŸ“’ This week at Tomarata School we have had our annual Scholastic Book Fair, which culminates in our Friday Book Character Parade. This year was really special, with great costumes from staff and students alike. The main aim of the week is to get kids excited about reading, which I know we have achieved.
We also had an art competition, and classes decorated their doors in the theme of Enchanted Forests.
Over the week we have sold over $2000 worth of books, which all helps us raise funds for our Library, as well as giving our students opportunities to increase their reading skills.
Thank you to everyone who has helped out, especially Heather our awesome Office Manager, and Stephen, who helped out with the character parade judging!
Have a great long weekend everyone!

Kia ora koutou,

This Saturday, the 25th of April is ANZAC Day. To commemorate this important date, Tomarata School will be hosting a ceremony at the war memorial located at the front of the school.

So that we don't clash with the Wellsford RSA service, we will start at 8am.

Everyone is welcome to join us as we remember those who have served our country during times of war.

If anyone would like to say a few words, there will be a time in the service for community members to speak.

Nga mihi nui,

Chris King
