⛈ Buller responds to orange weather warning

West Coast Emergency Management monitored and responded to yesterday's orange heavy rain warning, with local Emergency Response Teams, partner agencies, and emergency management staff remaining vigilant throughout the event.

Emergency Response Teams in Karamea, Seddonville, Mokihinui, and Inangahua played an important role in monitoring local conditions and maintaining situational awareness within their communities.

Throughout the warning period, Buller’s Incident Management Team monitored weather forecasts, rainfall levels, river conditions, and reports from across the district to ensure any emerging issues could be identified and responded to promptly.

West Coast Emergency Management also acknowledges the support provided by the West Coast Regional Council's Flood Impact & Risk Specialist Team (FIRST).

With water levels continuing to rise, we encourage everyone to take extra care overnight.

Afternoon Buller;
More rain is on the way, and river levels may continue to rise.

Please stay away from rivers, creeks, and flood-prone areas. Fast-rising water, strong currents, debris, and erosion can make these areas extremely hazardous.

• Avoid riverbanks and floodwaters
• Do not drive through flooded roads
• Be prepared for changing conditions
• Keep children and pets well away from swollen waterways

Even after the rain eases, rivers can continue to rise for some time.

SH6 FOX RIVER TO PUNAKAIKI - SLIP - FINAL UPDATE 5:30PM

The road is now OPEN to one lane following the earlier closure. Take extra care when travelling through the area.

GREY & BULLER DISTRICTS the MetService have issued a Orange heavy rain warning.

Situation
Northwest gales affect parts of the Canterbury High Country today. A large trough then moves onto central New Zealand tomorrow and early Monday, bringing heavy rain to many places, and possible snow to the mountain passes of the upper South Island. Please keep up to date with the latest forecasts.

Heavy Rain Warning - Orange

Area: The Grey and Buller Districts
Period: 21hrs from 6:00am Sunday to 3:00am Monday
Forecast: Expect 140 to 200 mm of rain about the ranges, and 60 to 90 mm of rain about the coast. Peak intensities of 15 to 20 mm/h Sunday afternoon and evening.
Minimal chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.
Action: Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.

Hi West Coasters,
The MetService have issued a wave warning for Jacksons Bay to Karamea. This coincides with high tides of greater than 3m so care should be taken in coastal areas especially whitebaiters who may be unfamiliar with conditions around river mouths.
Rain that is passing up the coast also has a number of rivers at elevated levels. Please take care.

It's a wet morning Westport and surrounds. The heavy rain is causing surface flooding around town. Please take care while driving and slow down to avoid pushing water into properties. West Reef are out working to put up signage. The rain is expected to ease over the next few hours.

MetService New Zealand has issued an updated the warning forecast for the West Coast. See the warning information below:

🌧️ Situation
A complex low and frontal system becomes slow moving over the South Island today, bringing a prolonged period of heavy rain which should turn to heavy snow about some inland parts of Canterbury and Otago. Warnings and Watches are in force. Stay up to date with forecasts in case changes are made.

🟠 Heavy Rain Warning - Orange

Area: Grey and Buller south of Westport
Period: 12hrs from 6:00pm Wednesday to 6:00am Thursday
Forecast: Expect 70 to 90 mm of rain, especially about the Paparoa Range. Peak rates of 10 to 20 mm/h.
Minimal chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.
Action: Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously.

Forecast: Expect 90 to 120 mm of rain. Peak rates of 15 to 25 mm/h expected Saturday night and Sunday morning. Thunderstorms possible Sunday morning.
Minimal chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.
