Growth can bring challenges, but if it's planned well, it can also create opportunities for the people who already call Awakeri home. 🌿🏡

Over time, growth could support more housing choice, improved walking and cycling connections, safer transport, new or improved community spaces, more local shops and services and investment in infrastructure and the natural environment.

None of these things happen automatically, which is why planning ahead matters. The Awakeri Structure Plan is about creating a framework so future growth can deliver wider benefits, rather than simply adding more houses.

Council flags at the Civic Centre are flying at half-mast today in honour of King Harald V of Norway, whose funeral is being held today.

King Harald served as Norway's monarch for 35 years and was widely respected for his dedication to his country and people.

🚧 Road closure alert 🚧

Salonika Street, Whakatāne will be closed from Tuesday, 8 September until Monday, 14 September, while contractors carry out essential service connection works under the road.

🦺 Residents will still be able to get to and from their whare/house - on-site traffic crews will be there to guide people through.

🌧️ If the weather doesn't play ball, dates may shift. We'll let you know on this post if that happens.

🔜 Once this work is complete, Crete Street will be next for similar works and a street closure - we'll share dates closer to the time.

🚶‍♀️ WARREN COLE WALKWAY RESEALING WORKS 🚲

Kia ora e te whānau,

A section of the Warren Cole Walkway between the Whakatāne Amphitheatre and the Whakatāne Skatepark will be resealed from Monday 7 September to Friday 11 September.

The walkway will remain open during the works, though some areas may be temporarily coned off.

You can still enjoy your spring walks, runs and bike rides along the river, but please take care when moving through the work area and follow any signage or temporary closures.

UPDATE: Rain check🌳 Today's Hillcrest Road tree trim is on hold while the crew handles urgent mahi elsewhere. We'll be back to finish the job later this week and will update with the new date and deets.

🌳✂️ The trees at Hillcrest Road are booked in for a trim! Overhanging branches will be cut back to keep the road safe and clear for drivers.
