From Monday 12 October, we'll be trialing a School Street on Pounama Place during school drop-off and pick-up times. Run in partnership with Whakatāne District Council, the trial will operate throughout Term 4.

A School Street is a simple idea. During the busiest times of the school day, vehicle access to Pounama Place is limited so tamariki can arrive and leave school more safely.

We've seen traffic, parking and turning vehicles create challenges around the school gate during pick up and drop off time. This trial is about creating a calmer, safer space for our tamariki and whānau at the start and end of the school day.

The School Street will operate on school days only:
8am – 8.45am
2.30pm – 3.15pm

During these times, temporary signs will be placed at the entrance to Pounama Place, and vehicle access will be restricted. Outside these times, the street will operate as normal.

The School Street will be monitored throughout Term 4 to assess how well it improves safety and whether any changes are needed.

Thank you for supporting this initiative to help keep our tamariki safe.
