What an amazing morning with our library interns Taine Matoe and Ruby King. Taine took us on a tour of his exhibition "Kiwis in the Veldt" and we learned so much about New Zealand's participation in the South African War (Boer War) 1899-1902. With Ruby we explored the rise of feminism in that era and looked at a book called "Dreams" by South African woman Olive Schriener.

“This story of endeavours to establish regional library services in New Zealand would seem to be a saga of failure. No version, whether devised by the New Zealand Library Association or the National Library (Service) has reached fruition.
So why tell the story at all? Perhaps because all stories need telling, if only to define where we have come from. Even failure generates ideas, and I cannot help hoping that the concepts of real library service (trained minds along with library materials) covering the whole country will continue to be serious objectives as boundaries melt and attitudes change under the local government legislation of 1989. Past evidence was doubtless useful in the 1988 rapid response period. Before you start on my version of events, I am happy to declare interest. For a long time better local authority boundaries have seemed essential, having had nearby the evidence of Dunedin's metropolitan gaps in service, as well as the more serious problems of long-distance enquiries. And my very first New Zealand Library Association Conference was Christchurch 1947 where the regional debate was fierce and permanent positions were taken. I rather think I took mine then.”
