What a whirlwind 24 hours of growth! 🌱

On Wednesday night, we received a generous donation of vegetable seedlings, and by Thursday morning, our amazing garden volunteers had them all planted in the St. Joseph Gardens.

A massive thank you to the Whanganui Garden Centre for your continued support of our community. Your kindness helps us grow fresh produce and connection right here in Whanganui. We can't wait to watch these little plants flourish!

What an incredible effort from Whanganui High School ! 🏫❤️

Our team at the City Mission Whanganui was absolutely blown away by the amazing support shown during this year’s annual food collection. The students and staff went above and beyond, gathering an astonishing 8,400+ cans to stock our food bank shelves.

We are so incredibly grateful for your generosity and for the ongoing commitment to supporting our community. You guys are truly fabulous! 👏

Thank you to every student, parent, and teacher who donated. You are making a real difference for local whānau in need.

Audience enjoys quality singing at fundraiser for Food Bank

Hector Hewins organised a concert at Majestic Square as a fundraiser for the City Mission’s Food Bank on Saturday, 15 August. It went from 12 noon initially to 1.30, but Hector continued singing to the clear enjoyment of an appreciative audience until about 1.50pm.

Hector was supported by five friends from Whanganui Collegiate, performing music mainly from the 1950s and 60s, although Hector sang by himself for much of the concert.

Hector has a great crooner’s voice ideally suited to the music of the 1950s, with many of the audience saying they would love to hear him again. He is however, off to Durham University in September so it could be a little wait.

In the audience was Richard Ellsworth, Head of Music at Collegiate, who sent us the following comments:

“We were thrilled with the Majestic Square concert which Hector, a former Collegiate music student, put on raising funds for Food Bank. We were even more thrilled that he invited five of our current Collegiate music students to sing with him. We were delighted with the boys' confidence at singing together in harmony with such a variety of crowd-pleasing repertoire. A shout-out also to Mr Iain Tetley, who runs our Boys Vocal Group at Collegiate and was their keyboard accompanist on Saturday.

Some of the boys took time out of rehearsals to sing for us at the event as they are performing on stage in our production of 'The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe' in the Prince Edward Auditorium this Thursday 20 & Friday 21 August at 7.00pm.”
The Food Bank is experiencing a significant increase in demand, and all donations are welcomed and needed. They can be dropped in at their base at 9 Park Place.

A heartfelt thank you goes out from all of us here at City Mission Whanganui to Hector Hewins and Boys Aloud for the Food Bank Charity Concert Performance this past Saturday; to Rapid Relief Team NZ for their support and for manning the Sausage Sizzler Stand for us; Thank you kindly to River City Press Whanganui for runing the article for City Mission Whanganui and we truly appreciate all the support and kindness shown.
Hector approached City Mission after participating in last year's Food Bank Drive to host a music concert to encourage the community to bring much-needed food and donations for the Food Bank within City Mission.
What a beautiful day it was. The sun was out; Rapid Relief Team NZ was cooking up a storm, and Hector and Boys Aloud had the crowd rocking to music from the 50s and 60s.
Forever grateful to all involved in making this day possible, as well as the community who contributed in any way - we appreciated you beyond measure. City Mission Food Bank thanks you for helping to keep our shelves stocked with much-needed food in very hard and challenging times, when the need has doubled.

We are calling on our amazing community to help those in need. On Saturday, 15th August, we will be collecting donations at Majestic Square to support our local Foodbank.
When: 12pm – 1:30pm

We were so humbled to welcome the Rotary Club of Whanganui North for their 5th visit to our gardens on Monday! 🙌

Thanks to their amazing support, we are producing nutritious veggies all winter long to help feed our community. Every visit reminds us how powerful teamwork truly is.
