Thirty-nine years ago today, New Zealand officially became nuclear-free - a defining part of our history and who we are as a nation. Under Labour, this will never change.

I went for a run this morning. First one in months ("too busy!", she'd cried). I thought it was because we are heading into campaign season & we need to look after ourselves as our mahi cranks up. But I realised it was because I need to feel HOPE. I can go for a run, even when it had been a while (so I know it will hurt) because I have hope - I trust I'll be better for it. This is what all our voters need... to feel hope. If we have hope, we vote. & hope comes from knowing there are people that we can choose to vote for who see us, understand us, & will fight for us. Don't lose hope. Vote.

It’s 11.15pm and this Bill has just passed its 3rd and final reading after being debated since 12noon today. The govt decided to pass it under Budget urgency (all stages), which means it has had no select committee process & we have had no advice from officials on it. I’m still not sure why the rush- the Minister couldn’t say. It’s a problematic Bill because it allows MSD to use automated decision making (ADM) very broadly. This was tried in Australia & had disastrous consequences. A recent Royal Commission in Australia recommended stronger safeguards & this govt could’ve chosen to learn from them and at least make its use safer here but they’ve chosen not to. This impacts those on benefits, including disabled people & those with significant health conditions. At a time when they are struggling to survive this Bill is likely to make their lives even harder. Proud to be part of a strong team that interrogated the Bill as best as we could.
