The Castlecliff flying fox is back and ready for take-off 👏

The repair work is now complete, with new footings and piles installed and the wires and trolley reinstated.

Thank you to everyone for your patience while we carried out these repairs. We know the flying fox is a favourite feature of the domain, and we're excited to see local tamariki and whānau enjoying it again!

Annual Plan 2026/27: Key decisions made

Today, elected members made decisions on the Annual Plan 2026/27 following community consultation earlier this year.

Like households and businesses across Whanganui, the council is facing increasing costs. Electricity costs alone are expected to add around $1 million next year, bitumen for roads is up 45%, and plastic pipes used in water infrastructure are up 28% since February.

Despite these pressures, elected members have worked to keep a strong focus on affordability, careful spending, and protecting the core services and facilities our community relies on.

The average rates increase for 2026/27 has landed at 6.9%. Importantly, the average household rates bill remains lower than what was projected for this year in the Long-Term Plan.

Thank you to everyone who made a submission, attended a hearing, sent feedback or shared their views. Your input helped shape these decisions.

Watch Mayor Andrew Tripe explain the key decisions and what they mean for Whanganui.

Planning a visit to Bason Botanic Gardens on Rapanui Road this weekend?

The Larson Orchid House conservatory will be taking a short break from today, Thursday, 5 June to Monday, 8 June while we carry out some maintenance on the ponga lean-to edging.

The rest of the conservatories and the wider gardens will remain open, so there’s still plenty to see and enjoy while the Orchid House gets a little TLC.

Thanks for your understanding!

The timeframe is tight for councils to develop a proposal for simplifying local government and we want to hear from you early in the process!

Join us for a public information session at the Whanganui War Memorial Centre at 5.30pm on Tuesday 9 June.

View the event page here - https://www.facebook.com/share/17Gwusf4t9/

We’ll have a community panel talking through the issues, and live audience voting on ideas. It’s a chance to listen, respond, and see what others in the room think in real time.

For those who can’t make it, the event will be livestreamed and people will be able to take part in live voting using their phones from home.

Not sure what this is all about? Through the Head Start programme, the government has given councils three months to come up with proposals for how they could merge with others.

Before we develop options, we want to hear what matters most to Whanganui.

This is just the first step – your feedback will help us shape the options we bring back to you.

Everyone’s welcome and tea and coffee will be provided.

📍 Concert Chamber, Whanganui War Memorial Centre
📅 Tuesday 9 June, 5.30pm
☕ Tea & coffee provided, no registration required

Keep an eye out for our Head Start survey which opens on Monday 8 June.

If you're walking, cycling or running through Kowhai Park this Friday, 5 June your route may be a little different while we carry out essential maintenance.

We've scheduled a general tidy-up of vegetation and w**d removal along the shared pathway on top of the stopbank between the park entrance opposite Nile Street and the southern end of the park.

For everyone's safety, this section of the pathway will be temporarily closed and signposted as our contractor needs to access it. The work is expected to take most of the day.

Please use the road through the park as an alternative and take extra care around traffic. If you're driving through the park, please slow down and keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists.

Thanks for your patience while we help keep Kowhai Park looking great and help its native plants to thrive.

📍 Check out the map showing the work area.

♻️ Following a successful community trial, the call has been made to provide wind-proof recycling crate nets to all households in our kerbside recycling area later this year.

The nets will be funded through the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Disposal Levy, not rates.

Survey feedback from trial participants was overwhelmingly positive:
✅ 99% of those who used the nets said they stop recycling blowing out of crates
✅ 31% said the nets encouraged them to recycle more often (or start recycling)
✅ 93% said they would continue using the nets after the trial

Cr Rob Vinsen says the nets should deliver "the best of both worlds" by keeping our recycling secure on windy days while preserving a key strength of a system that produces some of the cleanest recycling in New Zealand.

“The open-topped crates mean our collection crews can quickly spot non-recyclable items before they enter the recycling stream, so we have virtually no contamination. The nets allow us to keep that advantage while making sure recycling stays where it belongs – in the crate!”
