Hīkoi Mō Te Reo Māori - join the celebration

As part of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori/Māori Language Week from 14 to 20 September there will be a Hīkoi Mō Te Reo Māori/ Māori Language Week Parade on Wednesday, 16 September.

Supporters are asked to gather at the Whanganui City College fields by 9.45am in time to depart by 10am. Led by the Rātana Band (only the second time it has performed in the centre of Whanganui) the group will walk along the Avenue to Majestic Square, arriving by 11am. From 11am to 12.30 there will be live entertainment at Majestic Square.

There will be kura/schools, ECE’s, kohanga reo, community organisations, local businesses and anyone else who would like to take part. Everyone is welcome to come and join the parade.

Funding for the parade was obtained through the Te Reo Towns Activation Fund to encourage and celebrate te reo in their town, their way. “Te reo Māori grows stronger when it’s seen, heard and spoken in our everyday lives,” says Ngahiwi Apanui-Barr, Chief Executive of Te Taura Whiri, the Māori Language Commission.
“From ki-o-rahi tournaments to kapa haka concerts to reo Māori exercise classes, we’re excited to see hapori (communities) come together across Aotearoa to show their aroha and commitment for our indigenous language.”

There is also a lunchtime Te Wiki webinar series. Across four days, you can hear from those who are helping to normalise and strengthen te reo Māori in everyday life, from grassroots sporting communities and intergenerational language revitalisation to business leadership and storytelling on screen. We've had a couple of cases of chicken pox at school. These are the signs and symptoms. If you suspect your child has chicken pox please take them to the doctor. They cannot return to school until all their blisters have dried up. Stay well everyone!
