Yesterday’s talk, Understanding Neurological Conditions and Staying Independent, was exceptional. We are so grateful to Sarah Hopkins NZRP, Director and Senior Physiotherapist at Hibiscus Neuro Rehab, for sharing her time and expert knowledge with us.

Sarah gave us a fascinating insight into stroke, dementia, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Specifically, what these conditions are, what happens in the body and how they affect us. Most importantly, she explained how we can maintain function and stay active and independent for longer.

We look forward to welcoming Sarah back in the future!

We are so deeply grateful to Kendra Barr for delivering an extremely special Auckland Heritage talk on Saturday, 'Nourishing Traditions: An Introduction to Rongoā Māori'. During this presentation, Kendra explored traditional Māori healing practices and remedies as well as the holistic approach to wellbeing that is essential to Rongoā Māori.

One person from our community summed up the experience beautifully, writing that Kendra was "very welcoming and made the whole experience very relaxed, interesting and inspiring. Her content was perfect... (and listening to the sounds she made with her beautiful taonga pūoro was awesome!)... We also really appreciated the lovely Kawakawa balm that she had made for each of us – such a kind and generous gift, and one we greatly appreciated.”

Thank you, Kendra! We are indebted to you for your precious and specialist knowledge that you share with our community!

The October edition of our Te Pānui newsletter is out now, featuring the latest details on our ongoing programmes and special events! You can also pick up a hard copy from our front desk.

Please note that our currently running school holiday activities are not included as they would have completely overwhelmed things (we have one every day) but they can be found on our events page, right here on Facebook.

We’re delighted to welcome local artist Rosa Gaete back to Whangaparāoa Library with another wonderful collection of artwork.

Rosa’s interest in art began when she was young, and after a period away from painting, she found her way back to it. Having grown up in Chile before making New Zealand her home in 1983, Rosa brings a rich and varied perspective to her art. For her, reconnecting with painting has been a source of emotional renewal.

Her latest exhibition offers an intriguing mix of dynamic faces and places. There’s also an appealing variety of scale throughout the collection, with a number of very small pieces that allow us to look a little bit closer.

Movement and expression are a distinctive feature of Rosa’s work, giving the pieces a wonderful sense of life and character. Come along to Whangaparāoa Library and enjoy Rosa’s latest collection, on display until 11 October.
