Across Taitokerau, councils are working together to develop a joint proposal on what we want this to look like.

This is an opportunity for Northland to help shape its future, and we want to hear from you to better understand what you think is important.

Whangārei is one of the standout clean air locations in Aotearoa, according to the LAWA Air Quality National Picture 2026, released on 5 June for World Environment Day.

We monitor air quality at three sites in Whangārei, Dargaville and Kaitaia. These sites help us understand what’s in the air we breathe and what might be affecting it.

Any faces you recognise in here? Whangarei District Council and Northland Regional Council were proud to host the Upper North Island Strategic Alliance in early June 2026.

Mayors and organisation Chairs from Auckland and Northland visited Channel Infrastructure and Northport at Marsden Point, alongside KiwiRail Chief Executive Peter Reidy, to see the scale of opportunity on our doorstep.

Rt Hon Winston Peters also addressed the meeting as Minister for Rail, speaking about the Government's strategy to progress the Marsden Point Rail Link and the importance of a connected Upper North Island freight network.

A great day for Northland and for the Upper North Island.
