Kia ora Northland, a heads up from MetService New Zealand that it could be a thundery afternoon across the region.

⛈️ A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in place for Northland from 3pm–8pm, Friday 5 June 2026.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and around the watch area. Keep an eye on the sky and stay up to date in case a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued.

If severe thunderstorms do occur, they can bring intense rainfall that may cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas such as streams, rivers, or narrow valleys, and could also lead to slips. Driving conditions may also become hazardous, with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy rain.

So, be prepared for isolated heavy rain/downpours this afternoon, especially if you’re out and about. As always, make sure you take extra care on the roads and drive to the conditions.

With these forecast conditions we could see:
• Rapid rises in streams and rivers
• Surface flooding and slips
• Hazardous driving conditions, especially later today and tonight
• Reduced visibility during downpours

If you’re travelling this afternoon or evening, plan ahead and be prepared for changing conditions.

✅ More key reminders and tips:

The NZ Civil Defence Get Ready Schools Challenge is back for 2026 with some awesome prizes up for grabs!

The challenge is made up of eight fun, hands-on activities, and it’s a great way for tamariki to learn about hazards and emergencies while building confidence and learning to stay safe.

If you’ve got young kids at home, encourage them to have a chat with their teacher about signing their school up and getting involved.

Find out more and how to take part here:
https://getready.govt.nz/involved/schools-challenge

The Get Ready Schools Challenge is back for 2026!

We've worked with the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake, Fire and Emergency NZ, New Zealand Police, Hato Hone St John, and Wellington Free Ambulance to create eight new fun and engaging activities to help our tamariki be prepared:

⬇️ Learn and practise how to Drop, Cover and Hold.
📱 Know their important phone numbers and addresses.
🔎 Spot the difference to find items that have been fixed and fastened for an earthquake.
📖 Learn what different organisations do in an emergency.
✏️ Complete a New Zealand hazards word search.
🎨 Draw a hazard that could impact where they live.
🧯 Create a home fire escape plan.
🧭 Solve a maze to get out of a tsunami evacuation zone.

Plus, your child could win an iPad for taking part - but only if their school signs up at https://confirmsubscription.com/h/d/9360610768C7DC5C

04/05/2026

This week is New Zealand Sign Language Week. This year is all about 'An Aotearoa where anyone can sign anywhere'.

Signing anywhere means in emergencies too. That's why in 2022 we teamed up with Deaf Aotearoa and Auckland Emergency Management to create a booklet of 25 signs to learn for emergencies.

Learn important signs for an emergency like:
🏃‍➡️ evacuate
🌊 tsunami
⛰️ go to high ground
🥫 food

Kia ora Northland,

Rain across the region has eased this morning as the system affecting Northland continues to weaken. MetService has advised that all Watches and Warnings for this event have now been lifted.

While there is still a small band of rain offshore along the eastern coast, this is not expected to bring warning‑level rainfall to Northland.

Please continue to take care if you’re out and about this morning, especially on wet roads.

As we mark ANZAC Day, we pause to remember and honour those who served, and acknowledge the significance of today for communities across Taitokerau.

Our duty team will continue to monitor conditions and will advise if the situation changes.

Lest we forget.
