As the weather warms up, fire risk starts to shift - and the systems that protect your building need to keep up.

Emergency lighting is one of those systems you don't think about... until the power goes out.

If a fire knocks out the power or smoke fills a stairwell, emergency lighting and exit signage are what guide people safely out. But batteries degrade, bulbs fail, and signage can go unnoticed until it's tested.

Myth: "All extinguishers work on every type of fire."

Fact: Different fires need different extinguishers, and using the wrong one can make things worse, not better.

Fires are classified by what's fuelling them: ordinary combustibles like wood and paper, flammable liquids, electrical equipment, and cooking oils and fats all behave differently when they burn.

A water extinguisher on an electrical fire risks electrocution. Water on a hot oil or fat fire can cause it to flare up violently rather than put it out. That's why extinguishers are designed and labelled for specific fire types, not as a one-size-fits-all solution.

Ben joined Fireco in 2017 as a technician, working on the tools and out in the field with our customers. In 2021, he stepped into the role of Manager, before becoming Director of Fireco in 2023.

Having worked his way through the business, Ben has gained a strong understanding of the fire safety industry from the ground up and a real appreciation for the work our team does every day.

Ben is passionate about Fireco, the fire safety industry and, most importantly, the people behind the business. As a leader, he is committed to supporting the team, delivering a high standard of service to our customers and continuing to build a strong future for Fireco. He’s proud of how far the company has come and excited about what lies ahead.

Originally from South Africa, Ben moved to New Zealand in 2002 and now proudly calls New Zealand home. Outside of work, Ben enjoys spending time with his young family, especially heading to the beach.

He’s also a keen motocross rider and loves getting out on the bike whenever he gets the chance. When he’s not on two wheels, you might find him on the golf course - and by his own account, he’s not too bad! He also played his fair share of rugby in his younger days.

BWOF paperwork can be confusing, especially when you’re dealing with Forms 12 and 12A.

In simple terms, Form 12A is issued by an Independent Qualified Person (IQP) to confirm that the specified systems they’re responsible for have been inspected, maintained and reported on in accordance with the building’s compliance schedule.

Form 12 is the Building Warrant of Fitness issued by the building owner (or their authorised agent), confirming that the building’s specified systems have been inspected, maintained and reported on as required, with the relevant Form 12As attached.

Ever wondered what our technicians are actually doing when they’re on site servicing a fire alarm system?

There’s more to it than pressing a button and waiting for the alarm to sound!

During a service, our technicians inspect and test the different components of the system, including the control panel, smoke and heat detectors, manual call points, sounders, warning devices and any other connected equipment.

They check for anything that could affect the system’s performance and test that signals are being received correctly.

They’ll also review the system for any issues that need attention and record the results of the service, helping to keep the system maintained and your compliance requirements on track.
