Canceled tomorrow morning due to weather

The Whangārei Returned and Services’ Association regrets to inform the community that due to safety concerns and adverse weather conditions, the 6:00 am Dawn Service at Laurie Hall Park, Whangārei, has been cancelled.

The 10:00 am service at Maunu Cemetery is expected to proceed, but will remain subject to weather conditions on the day.

This decision follows advice received from the Whangarei District Council, Met Service, and Civil Defense regarding the uncertainty of the weather. The final decision has been made by the Whangarei RSA.

Thank you for your understanding.

Seagull Rescued
- Wayne Brasch

On Sunday 2nd November my partner and I went for a walk at the Loop. We parked near the Forsyth Barr Centre at the area where the 7m (approx.) tall rusty tubular metal Totem Pole sculpture is located. There, we came across a lovely Dutch family who were concerned that a seagull had become trapped on the inside bottom of the sculpture and could not fly out.

We made several attempts to remove a 15mm thick metal plate at the bottom of the sculpture to free the poor gull, unfortunately the plate was completely rusted over and the bugle head screws could not be moved. Several services were contacted including, bird recovery, WD council, fire brigade but attempts to free the bird were unsuccessful.

We retuned the following day and contacted Citycare Property, Whangarei, speaking to the wonderful Melissa there who was very concerned about the welfare of the gull and organized one of City Care contractors to come.

Five minutes later the contractor “Q” arrived and after a difficult struggle managed to remove the plate and free the poor gull.

We would like to thank all involved but an extra big THANK YOU to Melissa and “Q” from Citycare Property for their understanding, compassion and keeping our city beautiful.

SH1 BRYNDERWYN HILLS RESURFACING – PLANNED SUPER WEEKEND CLOSURES

Final resurfacing works on SH1 over the Brynderwyn Hills are planned for November 2025. These planned 4 day super weekend closures are to complete the resurfacing works needed so the road can reopen at 80km/h with passing lanes in time for summer.

To safely complete this work, State Highway 1 will be CLOSED between Brynderwyn and Waipu (in both directions), subject to weather and other factors, from:
• Thursday 13 November morning(12:01am) to Sunday 16 November midnight (11:59pm)
• Thursday 20 November morning (12:01am) to Sunday 23 November midnight (11:59pm)

During these closure periods three alternative scenic routes are available:
• Light Vehicles via either Mangawhai (using Cove Rd between Kaiwaka & Waipu, not suitable for trucks with trailer units) or via Paparoa and Mangapai (using Paparoa Oakleigh Rd between Brynderwyn & Oakleigh, HPMV's (High Productivity Motor Vehicles) are not permitted on this route).
• The preferred detour for Heavy Vehicles is using SH12 & SH14 via Dargaville (HPMV's must use this route).

The detour for cars only adds about 20 minutes to your journey.
