The new Mayoral Inner City Taskforce brings together agencies, business leaders and community partners to work together on a coordinated response to the challenges facing Whangārei's city centre.

At their first meeting they agreed on desired outcomes: safe and welcoming central city, a thriving hospitality and business sector, well maintained infrastructure and public spaces, improved accessibility and parking, and clear pathways to support services.

That planning is now moving into the action phase with a series of new initiatives. Read the full story:

Agreement signed with local musicians! 🎶 Our Community Impact Partnerships programme supports the capability and development of community groups and this morning we signed our first Partnership Agreement.

We're stoked to partner with He Reo (Whangārei music collective) as they create a new advocacy group for local musicians and work towards establishing a "fit for purpose" hub for the local music community.

Should Northland Councils merge into 1 Council or 2?

The question is part of the Local Government Reform, and we want to get your feedback before the big decisions are made.

Have your say online:

The Government has announced it wants to reduce the number of local authorities across New Zealand. As part of this, it is asking councils to consider amalgamating (combining) District and Regional Councils into single organisations known as "unitary authorities".

Thanks for your patience driving through the Springs Flat area - an update from the NZ Transport Agency:

Night works on State Highway 1 Te Kamo (Springs Flat) will be resuming this Sunday 14 June until Thursday 18 June.

This is part of Whangarei District Council's (WDC) Springs Flat Roundabout project. Night works planned for late May were paused following wet weather.

The work is happening at night between 7pm and 6am to minimise disruption to SH1 traffic. Stop/go traffic control will be in place, with a temporary speed limit of 30km/h.

Asphalt is laid in multiple layers, with each layer tested before the next, and the final layer providing a smooth ride for motorists.

When this stage of asphalt is complete, traffic will shift to the eastern side of SH1, so work can begin on the western side. The traffic shift will occur at the end of Thursday night’s works, in the early hours of Friday morning (19 June).

Take care when travelling through the area. Please note these works are weather dependent and may change at short notice.

We’re working with WDC and Fulton Hogan to keep everyone moving safely. Map design for this project was developed by Whangarei District Council.

Consultations open! We’re asking for feedback on three sets of rules (bylaws) for what's allowed in public places.

The three bylaws being reviewed are:
1️⃣ Public Safety and Nuisance Bylaw
2️⃣ Public Trading, Events and Commercial Filming Bylaw
3️⃣ Signs Bylaw

These topics are fairly wide ranging so they present a good opportunity to give feedback on what's allowed in Whangārei District and what's not.

1️⃣ The subjects covered by the Public Safety and Nuisance Bylaw include noise and intimidation, blocking pathways, rough sleeping, using bikes and scooters in the Cameron Street pedestrian mall, vehicles on grass, fireworks, aircraft use, planting and removing trees, horses and stock on beaches, and vehicle crossings.

2️⃣ The Public Trading, Events and Commercial Filming Bylaw aims to encourage markets, events and other activities in public spaces, while keeping everyone safe and making sure spaces are easy to use. It also includes new Outdoor Hospitality Guidelines to help create lively streets while keeping footpaths clear and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

3️⃣ The Signs Bylaw sets out rules for signs so businesses can advertise, while also keeping streets safe and easy to move around for cars and pedestrians. This includes rules for portable signs, real estate and election signs, event signs, and signs on vehicles.

Public consultation on all three bylaws is open from today (10 June) until 4pm on Monday 13 July 2026.

🪴 It's back! Our famous 'Pōhutukawa Coast' free native plant giveaway will happen on Friday 10 July 2026, the public holiday for Matariki ⭐

The native planting programme is a perfect match for Matariki which celebrates growth, renewal, and looking after nature. Whangārei District residents are invited to collect some free plants (two per household) and plant them on the long weekend. You'll be continuing a tradition that has lasted more than 35 years and distributed over 100,000 native plants.

❤️ Distributors (mostly volunteers) will be announced on 9 July.

Call for events: the Silver Festival is for "older adults" to explore Whangārei and maybe try something new. It will run from 1 to 14 October 2026; does your club or organisation have something to offer?

Each year we have dozens of interesting activities and ways for seniors to make new friends like through workshops, shows, craft groups, sports and more. It is a part of our wider commitment to being an Age Friendly Community.

🟢 UPDATE: Whau Valley Dam is open again now.

🚧 Temporary closure – Whau Valley Dam public access
From 29 May, public access to the Whau Valley Dam will be temporarily closed as a precaution, after a scum was found around the edges of the lake surface that may be harmful to pets.
Please be assured that drinking water from the dam is fully treated and safe.
We have reported the findings to Northland Regional Council, and our team is keeping a close eye on the situation. We will share updates as we know more.
Thanks for your understanding while we take this precaution to keep pets safe 💛
