Volunteer Firefighters Hard at Work on Busy Christmas Day in Hauraki-Coromandel Region

Volunteer firefighters across the Hauraki-Thames Coromandel region showed remarkable dedication on Christmas Day 2025, responding to 13 incidents from the first call at 1:32am – a structure fire in Hahei – through to the last at 11:09pm – a medical first response in Pauanui. These calls included a serious house fire, multiple motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, and a light aircraft incident in Pauanui, where a small plane crashed into an unoccupied house shortly after 9am.

The region's volunteer brigades – dropped festive plans to attend these emergencies, highlighting the vital role they play in keeping our rural and coastal communities safe, especially during the busy holiday period when visitor numbers swell.

These volunteers, many of whom balance full-time jobs and family commitments, are the backbone of fire and emergency services in rural areas like ours. Their rapid response on a day when most New Zealanders were enjoying time with whānau underscores their selfless commitment to community safety.

Supporting our volunteer firefighters is easy and makes a real difference. Attend brigade open days to meet the team and see the equipment up close – for example, the Matarangi Volunteer Fire Brigade is holding a Fire Station Open Day on 27 December 2025.

Look out for their raffles and collections, such as the Matarangi brigade's street collection on 31 December 2025. A major highlight is the Mercury Bay Emergency Services Summer Festival in Whitianga on 30 December 2025, a family-friendly event with stalls, games, raffles and food that directly raises funds for local emergency services. You'll also spot volunteers at many summer fairs and markets across the Coromandel – drop a donation in their buckets to help equip and train the people who keep our communities safe.

Have you ever considered joining your local volunteer brigade? Pop on down to your nearest station for a chat – you'll find them very welcoming. Training is provided, and the rewards are huge. Visit www.fireandemergency.nz to learn more.

Fireworks banned in the Coromandel Zone 🎆❌

• Fire and Emergency has banned private fireworks from 23 December 2025, 8am, to 30 January 2026
• High fire risk after warm, windy weather, scrub burns fast and sparks do not negotiate
• Two recent fires were caused by fireworks, near Pauanui and Port Jackson
• Around 80,000 extra visitors are expected this summer, please stick to approved public displays

The Coromandel is already in a restricted fire season. Most outdoor fires need a permit. Check before you light anything at checkitsalright.nz. Protect the place you came to enjoy.

Stay safe and reduce the risk of fire over summer. Find out what you need to do before you light a fire outdoors and whether you need a fire permit.

🚨🔥 Did you know a house fire can be deadly in under 3 minutes? That’s less time than it takes to:
☕ Brew your morning coffee
🎶 Sing along to your favourite song
😴 Hit snooze (again)

The difference between making it out safely and not could be as simple as having working smoke alarms.

✅ Test them today.
✅ Change the batteries if needed.
✅ Sleep easier tonight.

Because you can’t out-run smoke, but your smoke alarm can out-shout it. 🔔💨

Can you spot what went wrong here? 👀

While the residents weren’t looking, the wood basket that was too close to the fireplace, caught fire!🔥

Thankfully, someone saw smoke down the hallway and had put the fire out by the time Greymouth Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived.

This is a timely reminder to keep a metre clearance around fireplaces and heaters.

Stolen from Fire Brigade

Hahei Fire Brigade would like to apologize to wives, husbands, and lovers woken as we fumble in the dark getting dressed and looking for keys, co-workers picking up the slack because we were late due to a fire call, coffee addicts who missed their hit because the barista turned up late, employers who lost productivity and wages because their firefighter employee was late to work and clients of our self employed members who were expecting a job to be done today. Thank you all for your amazing support of our local Firefighters.

Today on International Firefighters’ Day – Whakanuia Ngā Kaipatuahi – we acknowledge and thank our firefighters for the mahi they do to keep Aotearoa safe.

Firefighters are a vital part of our communities across the motu. They not only respond to fires, but are often first on the scene at motor vehicle accidents, severe weather events, and natural disasters. They also play a key role in educating whānau about fire safety and work hard to reduce risk and protect our taiao.

International Firefighters’ Day is also a time to honour and remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, both here in Aotearoa and overseas. If you can, please take a moment today to reflect on and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.

To all our firefighters — thank you. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou.

See you tomorrow at the ANZAC service.

The Waikato Northern and Thames-Coromandel Area will move from a Restricted Fire Season to an Open Fire Season on Friday 18th April 2025, 8am, until further notice.

This covers the Hamilton City, Hauraki, Matamata-Piako, Otorohanga, Thames-Coromandel, Waikato, Waipa and Waitomo Districts.

An Open Fire Season means people can light outdoor fires without a permit from Fire and Emergency New Zealand, however we remind everyone they are responsible for ensuring that any fires they light are well controlled and safe.

🚨👨🏻‍🚒Stand with New Zealand’s Volunteer Firefighters: A Call for Equal Support👨🏻‍🚒🚨

Did you know that volunteer firefighters constitute approximately 80% of New Zealand’s firefighting force?

With nearly 12,000 volunteers serving communities across Aotearoa, their dedication and bravery are the backbone of our emergency services.

These volunteers undergo the same rigorous training as their career counterparts, face identical community expectations, and confront the same harrowing situations.

Yet, when they leave their regular jobs to protect our communities and sustain injuries in the line of duty, they do not receive the same support and compensation as permanent firefighters. It is deemed as a hobby to ACC. Is this fair?

Imagine a New Zealand without volunteer firefighters. The absence of these selfless individuals would leave many communities vulnerable, as volunteers are often the first and only responders in numerous regions.

Take the Coromandel Peninsula alone for instance - ALL volunteers.

Their collective efforts are valued at over $820 million annually, highlighting their immense contribution to our society.

To address this inequity, a petition has garnered close to 27,000 signatures in support of granting volunteer firefighters equal rights under the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) framework.

While this show of solidarity is commendable, it translates to roughly 2.25 supporters for each of the 12,000 volunteers dedicated to safeguarding our communities.

This movement transcends mere numbers; it’s about acknowledging and rectifying a systemic gap that overlooks the everyday community members who stand ready for the vulnerable among us.

Together, let’s stand in solidarity with those who selflessly serve us all.

Thank you
