Over the weekend, we had the privilege of celebrating an incredible group of people at our service award presentation.

Every award presented represents years of dedication, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to serving others. We warmly congratulate all our recipients and thank them for the enormous contribution they continue to make to communities across Aotearoa.

Among the many outstanding achievements, we were especially honoured to celebrate two truly extraordinary milestones.

Peter Hillgrove CStJ was recognised for an astounding 65 years of service, while Kevin Simpkin CStJ celebrated an exceptional 50 years of service.

Between them, Peter and Kevin have given an almost unimaginable 115 years in service of others- but their commitment is not measured in years alone. Both remain incredibly dedicated and active volunteers, generously giving an extraordinary number of hours each week to support their organisation, their colleagues and their community.

Their influence can be seen throughout generations of Hato Hone St John people. Many of today’s ambulance officers first knew Peter and Kevin as young St John Youth NZ cadets, growing up with them as incredible role models, mentors and examples of what a lifetime of service truly looks like. They continue to inspire the next generation, sharing their knowledge, encouraging others and demonstrating the values of compassion, commitment and selfless service through everything they do.

These milestones represent generations of lives touched, communities strengthened and people inspired. Peter and Kevin’s extraordinary legacy lives on not only through their own service, but through every person they have supported, guided and encouraged along the way.

Peter and Kevin, you are both exceptional role models and a tremendous inspiration to us all. We are incredibly fortunate to know you, learn from you and have the privilege of serving alongside you.

Congratulations to Peter, Kevin and every one of our deserving service award recipients. Your commitment reminds us of the profound difference that can be made through a lifetime devoted to helping others. ❤️🚑

The Archives are maintained by passionate and knowledgeable volunteers who help preserve the history of Hato Hone St John, including the equipment, stories and people who have shaped our organisation over the years.

More than 140 years of caring for Aotearoa New Zealand ❤️🇳🇿🚑

The story of Hato Hone St John in New Zealand began in April 1885, when Reverend Thomas Flavell and Dr Walter Hacon addressed a public meeting at St Mary’s Church in Christchurch. Together, they proposed establishing the St John Ambulance Association here in Aotearoa.

Their vision quickly captured the support of communities around the country.

In 1892, New Zealand’s first St John Ambulance Brigade was formed in Dunedin. Three years later, Dunedin also became home to our first St John Nursing Division. By 1905, nearly half of all St John divisions operating outside the United Kingdom were based right here in New Zealand.

That remarkable growth reflected something deeply Kiwi: when people in our communities need help, others are willing to step forward.

From those early volunteer brigades, Hato Hone St John has grown into one of New Zealand’s largest civilian service organisations and a familiar, trusted presence in communities across the motu.

Today, we have 8,000 volunteers and 4,000 paid staff united by a shared commitment to helping New Zealanders live healthier, happier and longer lives.

While we are best known for our emergency ambulance service, our people also support communities through first aid education, event health services, youth programmes, health shuttles, Caring Callers, medical alarms and many other initiatives.

You’ll find our people responding to emergencies, teaching lifesaving skills, transporting people to medical appointments, supporting patients and whānau in hospitals, mentoring rangatahi and simply being there for someone who needs connection.

Our vehicles, uniforms, technology and clinical care have transformed since 1885, but the heart of who we are has remained the same: New Zealanders caring for New Zealanders.

For more than 140 years, generations of people have given their time, skills and compassion in service of others. Their legacy lives on in every ambulance crew, volunteer, youth member, educator, supporter and community team serving across Aotearoa today.

This is our history. This is who we are. And together, we will continue to stand alongside our communities for generations to come. ❤️

With our ambulance service facing record workloads, frontline crews are working incredibly hard to care for our communities, often moving from one job to the next with very little opportunity for a proper break.

Last night, our own volunteers were at the Middlemore Hospital Welfare Station, caring for both ambulance staff and fellow volunteers as they came through. With snacks, home baking, hot drinks and a friendly face waiting for them, the welfare station provided crews with an opportunity to pause, recharge and feel supported before heading back out.

A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteers who gave their time to look after those who spend their shifts looking after others, and to all our ambulance staff and volunteers for the incredible work they continue to do across Auckland. ❤️🚑

Today, we pause to remember Michael Bancroft OStJ JP, who passed away on 7 July 2026.

Michael lived a life defined by faith, compassion, and service to others. As a professed member of the Marist Brothers’ Order, later a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland, and a Chaplain of Hato Hone St John, he devoted countless years to supporting people through some of life’s most difficult moments.

To many within Hato Hone St John, Michael was a trusted chaplain, offering a listening ear, quiet guidance, and unwavering support to volunteers, staff, patients, and their whānau. His ministry reflected the very heart of our organisation- caring for people with compassion, dignity, and respect.

Michael’s legacy extended far beyond our organisation. Affectionately known by many as “Father Mike”, he was a tireless advocate for Aotearoa’s rainbow and HIV communities. During the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, when fear and stigma were widespread, he stood alongside those who needed care most- providing comfort, conducting funerals, supporting grieving partners, friends and whānau, and ensuring that every person was treated with dignity and love.

He also served as the final convenor and guardian of the New Zealand AIDS Memorial Quilt before it was entrusted to Te Papa in 2012, helping preserve the stories and memories of those lost to HIV/AIDS for future generations.

Michael’s life reminds us that service is about far more than what we do- it is about how we make people feel. His kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment to others have left an enduring mark on our organisation and on communities throughout Aotearoa.

On behalf of everyone at Hato Hone St John, we extend our deepest condolences to Michael’s family, friends, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Thank you, Michael, for your extraordinary lifetime of faith, compassion, and service.

A huge thank you to Champion Flour for their incredibly generous donation of baked goods to our Middlemore Hospital Welfare Station.

These delicious treats will be available for our staff and volunteers to grab during long and busy shifts responding to emergencies. Whether it’s taking a quick break between jobs or grabbing something to eat before heading back out, having food readily available helps keep our teams fuelled and ready to continue supporting our community.

Small acts of generosity like this make a big difference to the wellbeing of those who dedicate their time to helping others, and we are incredibly grateful for Champion Flour’s support.
