Maple Glen

Maple Glen Maple Glen is a 100 acre private garden & perennial plant nursery in southern New Zealand. Maple Glen is our private garden here in Southland, New Zealand.

Started by Muriel Davison in a curving valley in the early 1970's it has continued to grow and now occupies around 100 acres of our farm. The garden features mass plantings of cold hardy perennials, Snowdrops, Daffodils, Trillium, Bluebells, Colchicum, Astilbes, Higo Iris and Inshriach Hybrid Primulas along with many hundreds of Rhododendrons and Mollis Azaleas. Many large ponds have been dug and

the wild bird life is another feature of the garden. There is also a nascent arboretum. Our attached plant nursery is stocked with over 400 perennials and bulbs all from plants grown in our garden. Open for business when the garden is open and also open to online sales at www.mapleglen.nz/shop.html

Maple Glen is open to the public 9am-5pm Saturdays & Sundays (mainly in spring). The garden is closed on all other days (unless by prior arrangement at our discretion for group bookings). Entry by donation.

We have one more open weekend coming up, April 25th & 26th. As long as we don't get any big storms the autumn colour should be quite good then (it's pretty good now!)

We came across this video made in our garden. It's quite well done and gives a snapshot of the garden as it was pre-storm (it's very different now!). We did both choke a bit on the description of our garden as 'easy care' though! One other little correction, the garden is only 100 acres, not 150. I guess that makes it 'easier care' ? ;-)

We are going back to have a look at Maple Glen Gardens, we visited here in 2022 and the extent and variety of this easy-care large private garden nearly blew...

We are open this coming weekend (March 28th & 29th). Colchicums and early autumn colour, Asters, Helianthus & Heleniums feature. We also have a good second flowering on the perennial phlox in the nursery. Not sure how many visitors we will see, the cost of fuel is scary!

We are open this weekend, February 28th and 1st of March! Looking good currently are the autumn heathers, hydrangeas, kniphofias and the mixed borders with later perennials still in flower. Kimmys white garden is hanging on well this year because it has been quite damp and cold lately. Saturday looks to have the better weather. Our nursery will be open at the same time as the garden, or you can shop online at www.mapleglen.nz/shop.html

Here's a good example of the scale of the reset. This rhododendron was flattened by a gum in the October storm. It's growing back though! We have maybe 50 rhododendrons that look like this.
