🇺🇸 Voting from Panama: How to Return Your Mail-In Ballot
If you are a U.S. citizen living in Panama, please don't wait until the last minute to return your absentee ballot!
The way you can return your completed ballot depends on the state in which you are registered to vote. Some states allow overseas voters to return completed ballots by email, fax, or an online system. Other states require the original ballot to be returned by mail. Be sure to check the specific requirements for your state.
📬 If your state requires your ballot to be mailed
For those of us living in Panama, there are several options:
1. U.S. Embassy – Diplomatic Pouch
If you are near Panama City: You can return your completed ballot through the U.S. Embassy's diplomatic pouch. The Embassy has specific procedures for accepting ballots, so check with the Embassy before going. Your completed ballot package must be properly prepared for mailing, including U.S. postage on the outer envelope unless you are using a postage-paid envelope/indicia.

Allow several weeks for a ballot sent through the diplomatic pouch to reach your election office in the United States.
2. Person-to-Person Mail Service
For those of us in the Boquete area, there is a local service that carries mail to the United States with people who are traveling there.
You can access this service at the Thursday Market.
If you use this option, send your ballot as early as possible so that it arrives at your election office before your state's deadline.
3. Commercial Courier
You can also use a commercial service such as DHL or FedEx. This is generally faster but considerably more expensive.
If you use a commercial courier, make sure you have the street address of your local election office—couriers generally cannot deliver to a P.O. Box. Keep your dated receipt as proof of when you sent your ballot.
🇺🇸 If you happen to be in the United States
If you take your ballot to a U.S. Post Office, ask the clerk to hand-cancel it with a dated postmark rather than simply putting it in a mailbox. This can be particularly important for states where the postmark date matters.

Do not assume that the rules are the same for everyone. Each state has its own requirements concerning how an overseas ballot may be returned and when it must arrive.
