The Fly River Warriors are proud to announce the selection of several young and promising players from the recently concluded Train and Trial Match in Port Moresby. These athletes have been identified as part of a development pathway to Tier 3 Rugby League Competitions in Queensland, Australia, providing them with direct exposure to Queensland Cup Rugby League clubs.
Selection was conducted by the Tier 3 clubs in consultation with the Fly River Warriors Management Team, based on roster needs, skill sets, physical attributes, game intelligence, and age eligibility. The program targeted talented players aged 18โ23, allowing clubs to further develop them for future professional opportunities in Australia.
In addition to rugby league opportunities, the selected players will also have access to employment and work experience, supporting their personal and professional growth.
All players underwent interviews by Fly River Warriors coaches, trainers, and management to assess availability and commitment, taking into account education, employment, family, and personal responsibilities.
The Rugby Development Pathway Team will now begin processing passports and Australian visas. While awaiting departure, the players will continue training with the Vipers Development Squad to maintain fitness and conditioning.
As part of its broader development strategy, the Pathway Development Team has successfully registered Port Moresby Waliya Rugby League into the Port Moresby Rugby League (PRL) Competition. The Fly River Warriors extend sincere appreciation to the PRL Board for accepting the bid. Eligible players based in Port Moresby will receive high-level training and will compete for Port Moresby Waliya as part of preparations for the Fly River Warriors Franchise Bid next year.
Special thanks are extended to Oceania Sports Management Limited (Australia) for their support in liaising with five Tier 3 clubs, and to former Kumul Mr. Ricky Sibia for facilitating initial connections and ongoing support.
The Fly River Warriors also acknowledge the invaluable support of sponsors and partners, including FRPG, OTML, SDP, Dokona Papua, Millennium Construction Limited, and LBL, as well as local rugby leagues and associations across Western Province. Appreciation is also extended to PNGRL, with special mention of Mr. Tony Waliya and team.
Finally, heartfelt thanks go to the Kiunga Rugby League Team, particularly Mr. Chris Mel, for strong leadership and prudent financial management.
โDreams are free. We hope to see one of these young menโor future recruitsโrepresent the PNG Chiefs or become the next Kumul from our Province.โ
This marks the first milestone in the Fly River Warriorsโ pathway programโbut it will certainly not be the last.
