KIK Team Madang officially launched the 2026 Coconut Replanting Program with a Coconut Awareness Campaign and Capacity Building Training held today with the Hibu Clan ILG at Kulakula Village, Banab – Sumgilbar LLG, Sumkar District.

A total of 30 active members of the Hibu Clan participated in the training. The event was officiated by the President for Sumgilbar LLG, Hon. Brendan Kennedy, and witnessed by the Ward 17 and Ward 18 Councillors.

During the program, he officially opened the training and presented a set of farming tools (purchased under the CP&SD Project) to the Chairman of the group to support their farming activities.

This event also marked the official rollout of the 100,000 Coconut Seedlings Distribution Program for Madang Province. The Hibu Clan group received 1,000 seednuts to commence their coconut replanting activities in their plantation.

This marks a strong start toward rebuilding and sustaining coconut farming in Madang Province.

KIK officer providing technical guidance on coconut nursery establishment in preparation for the People Living With Disabilities (PLWD) Day celebration on 30 March 2026 at Tabuna Ward, Bitapaka LLG, Kokopo District. The nursery will showcase coconut seedlings, white copra production, and cocoa nursery practices.

POTENTIAL investors from New Zealand are visiting East New Britain to meet with the provincial government and stakeholders to explore possible partnerships, particularly in the coconut industry.

They were accompanied by Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) managing director Alan Aku and Papua New Guinea high commissioner to New Zealand Sakias Tameo.

The investors, from New Zealand’s GoodFood Direct Limited, had shown interest in downstream processing.

Aku said they completed a survey on the number of coconut trees in 2023 in each province and district.

EAST New Britain (ENB) has potential to generate more revenue from coconut products, according to Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) managing director Alan Aku.

A survey conducted by the KIK in 2023 revealed that Papua New Guinea has 94,000 hectares of coconut plantations, with more than 16 million trees.

Of that figure, more than 13,000 hectares are in ENB, with more than two million trees.

During a recent visit to Kokopo, Aku said that the province could earn more revenue if coconut products were produced on a larger scale and processed into higher-value items.

Farmers Profiling | Orogawi, Chivising - Lae Morobe Province

Orogawi farmers in Chivising, Lae were recently profiled into KIK’s upcoming Management Information System (MIS). The exercise was kept short and simple, capturing only basic details such as names, contacts, location, and age.

This activity mainly served as a hands-on training for Coconut Development Officers (Extension Officers) who attended the Annual Review Meeting in Lae, allowing them to practice using Kobo Collect and syncing data to the MIS.

From the soon-to-be-launched KIK MIS, a full farmer profiling will be conducted to include socio-economic data, land details, farmer groups, nurseries, and plantations.

KIK is improving its systems to ensure accurate data collection, better planning, and more targeted support for coconut farmers across Papua New Guinea.

THE Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK) and the New Ireland government have signed a memorandum of understanding to renew collaboration on the provincial coconut development programme.

The programme is about revitalising and expanding the coconut industry in New Ireland.

An investment of more than K5 million will target the rehabilitation of rundown coconut plantations, establishment of nurseries, training programmes and the provision of start-up kits to businesses engaged in coconut processing and value-addition.
