All health care workers in the Eastern Highlands Province were advice to be on high alert for dengue fever and refer any suspected cases to the Goroka Provincial Hospital’s Physician and the Provincial Disease Control Officer.
Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Highlands Provincial Health Authority Mr. Joshua Soso said this in a memo to all the health workers in the province recently.
Mr. Soso said that the Provincial Disease Controller, Mr. Jackson Appo and Physician, Dr. Christopher Ope have sent out via a circular to alert all health care workers in the province to be weary of the dengue fever and report it to them quickly in light of the recent media reports on the five confirmed cases of dengue fever in NCD.
The circular stated that the confirmed cases in NCD is an indication of local transmission with habitation of the dengue fever carrying mosquito (aedes aegypti-albopictus) in the country.
The health workers were advised to do rapid diagnostic tests for malaria and widal tests for typhoid on cases presenting with high fever, muscle/joint pain, headache and malaise and treated accordingly.
As stated in the circular, the characters of dengue fever are usually described as acute onset of high fever, sever muscle pain/ joint pain, head ache and malaise.
A rash may be present at the onset. Classically, dengue has two peaks of fever, the initial febrile episode followed by an apparent recovery and then a second episode. Generalized lymphadenopathy and liver enlargement may occur with the second peak.
The most severe stages in Dengue fever is dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) which should be managed at the hospital only.

The Eastern Highlands Provincial Health Authority has a total of 25 doctors currently engaged in various departments of the hospital with more showing interest to join in.
Three doctors are working at the Kainantu District Hospital and the remaining 22 doctors are at the provincial hospital in Goroka.
Acting CEO Mr Joshua Soso revealed this in response to a letter to the editor published in the Post Courier newspaper on Wednesday 2nd March 2015 titled "Only HEO's at Goroka Hospital."
Mr. Soso would like to assure the public that the Health Authority is working very hard and also liaising with the National Department of Health to recruit specialist doctors into various sections of the hospital amid the general doctor shortage situation faced around the country.
He added that the overall improvement of the hospital facilities, equipment and working conditions of the doctors, has attracted many doctors to express interests to join the hospital and their interests will be processed soon.
“The Health Authority has started improving the physical facilities of the hospital and establishing systems to gather, store, analyse and retrieve quantifiable health statistics to back up its claims for more significant developments, including recruitment of more doctors,” said Mr. Soso.
He said contributions from concerned public are most welcome and should also provide alternative options for improving the health sector of the province.
