JOYCELYN AISI
Clan: Oviapokina
Village: Chiria Yule Island
District: Bereina
Province: Central
Joycelyn is a Food and Beverage Host who joined our team in August 2022. She is from Chiria Yule Island, part of the Kairuku Rural LLG. Located 160 km from Port Moresby, the island is named after Charles Bampfield Yule, a Royal Navy surveyor from the
1840s.
Her attire proudly reflects her Kairuku heritage. Around her waist, she wears a grass skirt made from tree bark, naturally dyed for its rich colour. Her heirloom armbands, handcrafted by her grandmother and passed down through her mother, are decorated
with shells from her island and feathers from the Bird of Paradise. Around her neck rests a kina shell breastplate—taken from where the reef meets the deep sea— symbolising status and ocean ties. Beneath it hangs a strand of dog teeth, unique to the Kairuku people. Her hair is adorned in Kairuku colours and framed by rooster feathers, while her earrings, made from turtle shells, are another gift from her grandmother.
Her face paint carries deep meaning: red represents the bloodshed of her ancestors, yellow signifies peace, and the single black line she chose (rather than the many worn by others) is a tribute to her warrior heritage. As a final homage to her grandmother, Joycelyn holds a clay pot crafted by her hands. This multipurpose vessel is treasured by the family as a memento—symbolising both tradition and the enduring bond between generations.
Her message to young Papua New Guineans this Independence Day is " Be proud of your culture and tradition. I am a proud daughter of Kairuku and you should also be proud of who you are as that is your identity"
