Family and Sexual Violence Action Commitee

Family and Sexual Violence Action Commitee The FSVAC Page is about keeping the public and partners informed on the events and activities of FSVAC, The actual implementation started in 2002.

The Family and Sexual Violence Action Committee (FSVAC) was set up as one of the sectoral committees of the CIMC in 2000. The recommendation to establish such a committee came from a workshop conducted in 2000 as part of Papua New Guineas silver jubilee celebrations. Concerns about the alarming rate of family and sexual violence against women and children caused several organisations and individu

als to approach the British High Commission (BHC) and AusAID through the Institute of National Affairs (INA) to sponsor a workshop to address these issues. The result was the setting up of a national body (FSVAC), specifically mandated to look into the problems associated with family and sexual violence and to come up with concrete ways of addressing these problems. In 2001 a study was commissioned by CIMC & INA with funding assistance from British High Commission and Aus AID. This study aimed at analyzing the family and sexual violence situation in the country. The output of the study is an integrated long term strategy (2001-2006).

Government Awards K2.5 million to 23 CSOs to Combat GBV

28 November 2025

The National Gender-Based Violence Secretariat (NGBVS), under the Department for Community Development and Religion (DfCDR), inducted 23 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from all four regions of Papua New Guinea as recipients of the 2025 GBV Grants Program.

The ceremony, held on November 25 at the Highlander Hotel in Mt. Hagen coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

To tackle the ongoing issue, a total of K2.5 million has been awarded to CSOs working across the country to respond to and prevent gender-based violence.

These grants will support survivor-cantered services, community awareness campaigns, trauma counselling, legal assistance, and behaviour change initiatives.

Secretary Jerry Ubase, in his official comments, highlighted the urgent need to address digital violence against women and girls, the theme for EVAW Day 2025.

He stated, “We must build safer platforms and stronger pathways to ensure victims’ safety and hold perpetrators accountable. CSOs are frontline responders, and your resilience gives us hope for a future free from violence.”

NGBVS Director Ms. Diane Kambanei reaffirmed the Secretariat’s commitment to directly managing the grants and supporting CSOs through clear standards, financial compliance, and communications guidance.

The event saw the 23 CSOs formalize agreements with government officials and concluded with grantees expressing enthusiasm and a strong sense of purpose.

A clear set of criteria was used to assess all applications, and the committee selected the 23 successful organizations based on those requirements.

This grants program is an annual initiative, and unsuccessful applicants and other interested CSOs are encouraged to apply in the next round.

You can make a real difference in someone’s journey to safety.

If someone you know is experiencing family or sexual violence, or child abuse, there are simple but powerful ways to show your support:

1. Listen without judgment. Give them space to share their story and believe what they tell you.
2. Avoid blame. Never hold the victim responsible for what happened.
3. Offer reassurance. Let them know you are there to help and that they are not alone.

Your understanding and support can be the first step toward safety and healing.

LEST WE FORGET

Yesterday was the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women (and Girls). The day is one of the UN-sanctioned dates under the global 16 Days of Activism (in PNG we say this is the 20 Days of Activism as it is inclusive of Universal children's Day on November 20). The global activism is a 16 days/ 20 days of human rights campaign toward raising awareness and calling for action globally towards ending discrimination of all forms and human rights violations, especially violence against women and girls, including children, people with disabilities and other vulnerable population amd calling for those in power and everyone else to recognise and uphold their rights.

We have come along way, and each time we think we have have made progress, this happens. Each setback through such disrespectful and offensive act, is by choice of triggered by human conscience perhaps scarred, or from a place of hurt, discomfort, confusion and insecurity. A conscience shaped by cultural ignorance that women and girls should act or carry themselves in a certain way and should be punished if they go out of line. It took one person to act out perhaps what the rest were thinking seeing that no-one stood up for this sister or daughter. Societies and communities not just families are responsible for ensuring the next generation of young male students, workforce and fathers are respectful and steer value and treasure women

The University of Technology (Unitech) Chancellor, Sam Koim, has strongly condemned a recent display of what he describe as "animalistic behaviour" at the campus, following the circulation of several videos and images on social media.
