NATIONAL FISHERIES AUTHORITY CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR

As we celebrate the joy and peace of Christmas, I extend my warmest greetings to all Papua New Guineans, our fishing communities, industry partners, stakeholders and friends of the fisheries sector, both at home and abroad.

Christmas is a time for reflection, gratitude and hope. It invites us to pause and give thanks for the blessings of the year that has passed, while renewing our commitment to one another and to the future of our country we are shaping together.

The year has been a significant one for the National Fisheries Authority. Through collective effort, determination and shared purpose, we have strengthened fisheries governance platforms, launched significant strategic documents to give focus to Aquaculture and Tuna Domestication, improved compliance and monitoring infrastructure, advanced organisational procedures and processes, increased market access and continued to support livelihoods across our coastal and inland communities.

We have deepened partnerships with industry and development partners, progressed important reforms, and ensured that our fisheries continue to contribute meaningfully to national revenue, food security and employment.

These achievements are not the work of any one institution alone. They are the result of the dedication of our fisher men and women, processors, exporters, provincial administrations, stakeholder partner organisations, and the hardworking officers of the NFA who serve with integrity and commitment across the country.

This Christmas also holds special national significance as we reflect on 50 years of Independence. Over the past five decades, Papua New Guinea’s fisheries sector has grown from modest beginnings into a vital pillar of our economy and a cornerstone of our people’s way of life.
Our oceans, reefs, rivers and lakes have sustained generations, provided nourishment for our families, and offered opportunity and potential to countless communities.

As a nation, we honor the vision of those who came before us, who recognised that our fisheries resources are not only economic assets, but a shared heritage to be protected, respected and passed on to future generations. Their legacy reminds us that true prosperity lies in stewardship, unity and foresight.

Looking ahead, the National Fisheries Authority remains committed to ensuring that our fisheries are managed sustainably, inclusively and transparently, so that the benefits continue to flow to our people for the next 50 years and beyond. Together, we will continue to build a fisheries sector that supports national development, empowers communities and safeguards our marine and inland ecosystems.

On behalf of the National Fisheries Board, Management and staff of the National Fisheries Authority, my family and I wish you and your families a peaceful and joyful Christmas, and a New Year filled with hope, health and renewed purpose.

May the true spirit of Christmas strengthen our unity as a nation and inspire us to work together for a prosperous and sustainable Papua New Guinea.

God Bless Papua New Guinea

Illegal, Unreported & Unregulated (IUU) fishing is a threat to our food security, our national economy, and the wellbeing of our communities. It undermines the sustainable development goals that Papua New Guinea has been working hard to advance—especially in partnership with international allies.

The MCS partners we collaborate with in the country are PNGDF ME, RPNGC, CUSTOMS, NAQIA, ICA, and provincial agencies. These are mostly done under separate MOUs. In the region, we partner through the RMCSSC based in Honiara, where we utilize the QUADs GROUP, including AUS, USA, FRANCE, and New Zealand. On the bilateral engagement with work with USA ship rider arrangement and France.

We also work closely with Aus in the TSPZ. Im the ASEAN region is through the ARAFURA TIMOR SEAS sub group of the RPOA IUU through data sharing arrangrments

Through long-standing cooperation with partners like Japan’s OFCF, National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has delivered tangible outcomes for coastal and offshore fisheries, including technical advisory support, trap-net initiatives, capacity-building programs, and millions of Kina worth of essential goods and services that strengthen fisheries management in PNG.

This month, we are taking the next major step in protecting our oceans and marine resources with the commissioning of two new surveillance vessels and the world-class Mission Command Centre in Daru.

Tune in to our page to be a part of the journey.

Hon. Jelta Wong, PNG Minister for Fisheries & Marine Resources, addressed the 9th Pacific Tuna Forum in Nadi, Fiji (Oct 14–15, 2025).
Key themes: resilience, innovation, equity, and sustainable trade for a prosperous future.

Emphasized Pacific nations as custodians of a global tuna industry worth over USD 47B.
Highlighted challenges: climate change, shifting markets, and IUU fishing.
Introduced the East New Britain Initiative (ENBi) as a transformative framework to shift from raw material suppliers to regional shareholders of our resources.
Core focus: local tuna processing to drive economic stability, job creation, and upstream/spin-off benefits (logistics, packaging, marketing).
Local processing strengthens anti-IUU efforts through better traceability and supply-chain control.
Commitments to food security and intergenerational stewardship: profits stay local, empowering communities and protecting resources.
Call to collaboration, smarter investment, and a united regional identity to demonstrate Pacific leadership in sustainable fisheries.

Vinaka, Boina Tuna.
