Happy 47th Independence Anniversary - PNG. We are a proud nation, a nation of a thousand tribes, 8 hundred distinct languages and cultures, coming together as One Country - One Nation - under One God. There is no reason why a public entity such as the AIC cannot become a professional and responsible entity in all aspects of its mandate and accountability.

At the AIC we continue our efforts to build an agile entity by continuing the roll-out of the S.P.I.R.I.T. of AIC - our values. This week we discussed the importance of being a responsible entity starting with ourselves as responsible professionals, part of a responsible workforce, all together understanding our obligations to ensure a high standard of aviation safety by working collaboratuvely with all aviation stakeholders in the system.

Honourable Walter D Schnaubelt - Member for Namatanai and Minister for Civil Aviation launches the AIC 5 Year Strategic Plan last Thursday 7th April. Minister Schnaubelt acknowledged the safety critical role the AIC has been mandated to perform to contribute to safety in the air transport system both in PNG and internationally, and encouraged the Team to continue the professionalism displayed since the inception of the agency. He also acknowledged that within the transport sector at large, civil aviation is leading the way in understanding the circumstances surrounding an accident and then taking the necessary corrective actions to address the defect(s) to improve the safety in air transport safety going forward. Although the AIC is mandated to investigate aircraft accidents after the act (reactive), its findings and the safety recommendations it makes resulting from its investigations can facilitate timely (pro-active) safety critical decisions and actions by relevant and concerned parties that can lead to the prevention of future accidents and thereby, improve aviation safety in the longer term.

Standing with Minister are, from Left to Right: Acting Deputy Chairman - Capt. Andui Koralyo; AIC Chief Executive Officer - Dean Kuri; Civil Aviation Minister - Hon Walter Schnaubelt; and Capt. Aria Bouraga - Acting Chief Commissioner and Board Chairman.

We successfully launched our core value number 2 - "Professionalism", last week. It coincided nicely with the observation of the UN declared International Women's Day on Friday 4th March.
In the AIC we are developing professionals, (regardless of gender), who are expected to display the highest levels of "commitment and dedication to their work; we invest heavily in ensuring that the team is constantly acquiring the required knowledge and aiming for excellence in the application and outcomes based on the new knowledge; to keep an open mind for continuous learning and change where needed; we focus on the principles of total quality where we aim to get it right on the first attempt all the time; and in all these; we strive to accord professional courtesy to everyone we come across in our line of work.

The AIC hosted the Projects Steering Committee (PSC) meeting on Friday 4th March at the AIC Office at 6-Mile, Port Moresby. The PSC comprises of Senior Members from the Treasury, National Planning and Finance Departments, and their function and responsibility is to assess the use of public funds appropriated for development projects in the various government entities and then compiling their reports that goes to the Department of National Planning for the purposes of planning and budgeting. On the basis that transparency, accountability and good governance has been the foundation of our operations in the last 3 year, I can comfortably conclude that the outcome of the meeting was very fruitful and satisfying. Thank you to my Team for the effort they have put in to demonstrate that we live and operate by our corporate values, the S.P.I.R.I.T. of AIC.

On the subject of corporate culture Peter Drucker warns us in vivid terms that, "culture eats strategy for lunch." In other words our great plans can be easily undone if we don't also have a strategy to address the existing corporate culture and have it aligned to support the effective ex*****on of strategy. At the AIC we are continuing to educate, socialize and consolidate our efforts to build an agile and winning corporate culture in the AIC. Corporate cultures don't just appear out of thin air, they are deliberately created by leaders with a vision and purpose for a better organization and a better future.
