🌏 Key Highlight | 6th Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers Meeting (PRETMM 6) 2026

"Reducing dependence on imported transport fuels is not only a decarbonisation measure - it is a resilience measure, a fiscal measure and a strategic measure."

At the 6th Pacific Regional Energy and Transport Ministers Meeting (PRETMM 6) in Port Moresby on Monday, 4 May 2026, GGGI Regional Director for the Pacific Sakiusa Tuisolia called on Pacific governments to treat transport as a core energy security issue, warning that the region’s deep reliance on imported petroleum leaves island economies exposed to repeated global fuel shocks.

Speaking during a panel on e-mobility policy frameworks, Tuisolia highlighted GGGI’s work across Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu under three GEF-8 funded projects, totaling USD 4.5 million in grants and USD 56.5 million in government co-financing - signalling strong country ownership of the clean transport transition.

Tuisolia outlined five priorities for Pacific decision-makers:

⚡ Treating transport as part of the energy security agenda.

⚡ Investing in the full enabling ecosystem beyond vehicle promotion alone.

⚡ Targeting high-impact segments such as government and commercial fleets.

⚡ Deepening regional cooperation on standards and financing.

⚡ Deliberately linking e-mobility with renewable energy and resilience planning.

"The case for e-mobility in the Pacific is no longer only environmental," Tuisolia said. "It is about protecting households and public budgets and giving Pacific countries greater control over their energy future." 🔋 🔌
