➡️ POMBC launches website: (2026-08-24) DHERST Secretary officially launched the Port Moresby Business College (POMBC) website. The website launch is positioned as an early, visible step in POMBC’s transformation—from a historically significant institution into a modern, digitally enabled, industry-responsive and innovative college, with its success ultimately measured by student outcomes,
programme relevance, partnerships and its contribution to PNG.

➡️ NSDA Meeting: (2026-08-24) The National Skills Development Agency (NSDA) held its fourth meeting of the year today, receiving updates on the Educational Quality and Assessment Programme (EQAP) recognition process for qualifications and on preparations for the PNG National Skills Competition in November. Members also reflected on the successful participation in Resources Week, which promoted TVET and strengthened industry engagement. The meeting also discussed the draft National Skills Development Plan 2027.

➡️ Consultation with Gulf Provincial Administration on Memorandum of Partnership: DHERST held consultations with the Gulf Provincial Administration to finalise the Memorandum of Partnership (MoP), ahead of its proposed signing later this month. The partnership will strengthen collaboration in advancing higher and technical education initiatives in Gulf Province and pave the way for the establishment of a technical college in the province.

➡️ K50 million for PNG University of Medicine and Health Sciences: On 12 August, the Minister presented a K50 million cheque to the University to support infrastructure development at its 3-Mile Campus in Port Moresby. The funding was presented in the presence of university representatives, DHERST Secretary Mr Lonnie Baki and senior DHERST officers.

➡️ Wabag ICT Project Progress: DHERST conducted a fact-finding visit to review progress on the DHERST-supported Wabag ICT project and discuss the next steps with the Wabag District Development Authority (DDA). The DDA will now submit the information required to progress a Memorandum of Understanding with DHERST by the end of August. The purpose of this MoU is to establish a cooperative framework between Wabag DDA and DHERST to support the planning, development and implementation of higher and technical education infrastructure projects in Wabag District.

➡️ Manus Technical College Transition: DHERST conducted a soft audit of the Manus Training Centre as part of preparations to transition it into a technical college. Supported by the Australian Government () through the PNG–Australia Partnership Strongim Wok Long TVET Program (SWLT), in partnership with the National Department of Education (NDoE) and the Manus Provincial Government, the project is expected to expand access to technical and vocational education in Manus Province, which currently has no higher education institution.

➡️ Private Providers Registration and Accreditation: Representatives from Datec Learning Centre and Komatsu Niugini Limited visited DHERST to seek guidance on registering and accrediting private higher education and training providers. The engagement reflects growing industry interest in delivering quality education and training and supports DHERST's commitment to expanding access to accredited higher and technical education opportunities across Papua New Guinea.

What's new this week?

➡️ Restoring Vital Infrastructure: DHERST facilitated the signing of a minor works contract on 27 July to rebuild the Madang Teachers College printery building, which was destroyed by fire last year. Once completed, the new printery will produce the teaching and learning materials student teachers rely on during their school-based practicum, restoring an essential service for the college.

➡️ Regional Partnerships: Pasifika Communities University (PCU), Fiji, met with the DHERST Secretary and senior officials to discuss a pathway for delivering online academic programmes in Papua New Guinea. The meeting also explored potential collaboration, including partnership with Papua New Guinea Universities.

➡️ Milne Bay Partnership: A four-in-one classroom and office complex and new staff houses were commissioned at Milne Bay Teachers College this week under the DHERST–Milne Bay Provincial Government Memorandum of Partnership. DHERST Secretary Mr Lonnie Baki also opened new staff houses at St Barnabas School of Nursing and inspected the proposed Technical/Polytechnic Institute site.

➡️ Partnerships Signed: DHERST signed four Memoranda of Partnership (MoPs) with the provincial governments of Manus, New Ireland, Madang and West New Britain. The agreements will support the planning, development and delivery of higher and technical education initiatives in each province, strengthening collaboration between the National Government and Provincial Governments.

The agreements were signed on behalf of DHERST by Secretary Mr Lonnie Baki. The provincial governments were represented by Mr Mame Kasalau, MBE, Provincial Administrator for Manus; Mr Michael Pamaraka, Acting Deputy Provincial Administrator for Madang; Mr Richard Andia, Provincial Administrator, New Ireland Province; and Mr Leo Mapmani, Provincial Administrator for West New Britain Province.

➡️ Student Accommodation: The groundbreaking ceremony for the Caritas Business College 80-bed female hall of residence was held this week. From the GoPNG Capital Investment Program (CIP), DHERST has contributed K2.6 million, with Caritas Business College funding the balance. The project marks a significant step in expanding access to higher and technical education by providing safe accommodation for female students, enhancing student welfare, and strengthening the college's capacity to produce skilled graduates for Papua New Guinea's development.

➡️ Digital Transformation: DHERST is working to strengthen online registration and accreditation services for higher education institutions, aiming to reduce administrative burden and improve access to clear, consistent information. A prototype validation and testing session was held with Catalpa International DHERST, Caritas Business College (Caritas Schools ) and Port Moresby Business College. This work is supported through the PNG–Australia Partnership.

What a week at PNG Resources Week and the PNG Resources Golden Exhibition! Thank you to everyone who visited the DHERST booth.

From student demonstrations and conversations with industry to showcasing TVET reform, it was a great opportunity to highlight the skills, people and partnerships shaping the future of TVET in Papua New Guinea.

What's new this week?

➡️ PNG Resources Week: If you were at APEC Haus this week, DHERST was hard to miss! From engaging conversations with industry and education partners to inspiring student stories and hands-on student demonstrations, DHERST showcased the important role of higher education and TVET in preparing Papua New Guinea's future workforce.

On World Youth Skills Day, Secretary Mr Lonnie Baki represented the Minister, highlighting the importance of strong partnerships between education and industry to ensure graduates have the skills needed for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

DHERST's participation at PNG Resources Week was supported through the PNG–Australia Partnership.

➡️ University of Goroka: DHERST welcomed the swearing-in of the new University of Goroka Interim Council members, an important step in strengthening leadership and governance within Papua New Guinea's higher education sector.

➡️ Increasing Access through PPP: Prospective higher education institution PNG Education College is collaborating with DHERST to transition from a permitted secondary school to a teacher training college, with plans to offer a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and a Diploma in Elementary Teaching.
