The European Union is proud to have been the main donor supporting the development of the Human Rights Policy, which aims to create just, safe, and peaceful communities by strengthening the protection and promotion of human rights, guided by the national legal framework and international standards.

Through two consecutive projects, with a total value of more than 7 million kina, we have contributed to the legal and policy foundations for reform, including the review and finalisation of the draft Constitutional Amendment and Organic Law for the future Human Rights Commission Institute. Our support also underpinned broad-based consultations including provincial, regional, and national dialogue processes—which strengthened the draft legislation and reinforced national ownership of the reform process.

With EU support, the Department of Justice and Attorney General, through technical assistance from the Human Rights Secretariat, reached a key milestone with the launch of Papua New Guinea’s National Human Rights Policy.

The focus going forward is to assist Papua New Guinea in moving from policy and draft legislation to implementation. This includes:

▪️strengthening the Human Rights Secretariat and partner institutions;
▪️supporting consultations and legislative steps;
▪️reinforcing awareness and advocacy; and
▪️strengthening treaty reporting and follow-up.

As stated by Ambassador Erika Hasznos, the European Union stands by Papua New Guinea as a committed partner in turning this policy into reality.

That’s exactly what Operation IRINI did when boarding the sanctioned MV SOUTH STAR, uncovering inconsistencies in its documentation that reinforced the suspicions: the vessel was sailing without nationality.

The Pacific Cyber Week took place this time in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, and brought together participants from the region and beyond.

The Ambassador of the European Union, Erika Hasznos, highlighted the common journey of European Union Member States to tackle constant cyber-attacks, as well as their willingness to share expertise with other partners. The EU CyberNet programme, now expanding its activities to the Indo-Pacific, was set up for this purpose, and European experts presented hands-on experience from Estonia and Czechia.

The European Union Delegation was very pleased to engage with Estonian Deputy Minister for Global Affairs, Ms Minna-Liina Lind, leading a high-level delegation from Estonia during this dynamic week.

No single country can address this challenge on its own. It does not stop at borders, and no single country can defeat it alone. Over the past decade, the EU has funded more than 100 projects worldwide to help address the root causes of violent extremism. Among them, the STRIVE Juvenile programme partnered with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Indonesia, Iraq and Nigeria to protect children from recruitment and exploitation by groups.

Reliable. And that’s the whole point.

Today marks International Criminal Justice Day.

The International Criminal Court remains the cornerstone of the international criminal justice system, delivering accountability for the most serious crimes of concern to the international community and upholding the rights and dignity of victims.

The European Union reaffirms its firm commitment to the Rome Statute, to its universality and integrity, and to its full and effective implementation. All states are called upon to cooperate fully with the Court.
Violations of international law, including international human rights law and international humanitarian law, continue to cause immense suffering around the world. Accountability is what prevents future atrocities and what makes lasting peace possible.

There can be no lasting peace without justice, and no justice without accountability and meaningful reparations for victims.

Across the Pacific, communities are showing that lasting change begins with local leadership. The story shared from Vanuatu is a powerful reminder that when communities are empowered to lead, they build healthier, safer, and more resilient futures.

The same approach is making a difference in Papua New Guinea.
In Banz, Jiwaka Province, the European Union and UNICEF are supporting communities through the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach as part of the Klinpela Banz Komuniti Projek. By strengthening local leadership, improving sanitation and hygiene practices, and investing in resilient WASH systems, communities are creating healthier environments for children and families while building resilience for the future.

From Vanuatu to Papua New Guinea, these experiences demonstrate the value of community-driven solutions and the power of partnerships in advancing sustainable development across the Pacific.

Together with our partners, the European Union remains committed to supporting locally led initiatives that improve lives and leave no one behind.

In Vanuatu, 89% of schools are exposed to drought, while climate-related disasters continue to interrupt children's education.

Together, the EU and UNICEF are helping build a more resilient education system. Backed by a €10 million EU investment, the Climate Resilient Sheltering Schools Programme will strengthen schools with safer infrastructure, renewable energy, clean water and disaster preparedness, benefiting more than 130,000 people while helping children keep learning through every crisis.

This is what multilateralism makes possible. The EU and its Member States are the largest financial contributor to the United Nations system, helping deliver lasting impact for children worldwide.

Reliable. And that's the whole point.

Russia has long sought to present itself as a reliable partner and a source of stability beyond the West. But as pressure grows, the gap between its promises and its actions is becoming harder to ignore.
For many governments, today the question is whether a partnership with Russia is still a strategic and future-proof choice. A relationship built on instability, broken commitments, and shrinking influence looks increasingly less like a strategic asset and more like a strategic liability.
