When he stepped through the doors, finished with months of commitment and healing at the reformation center, the first thing he saw were their small, waiting faces. For so long, addiction had built walls between them—missed birthdays, broken promises, distance that felt impossible to cross. Today those walls came down.

It was quiet at first, eyes meeting through happy tears, then the rush of small arms wrapping tight around him. In that embrace, there was relief for lost time, gratitude for second chances, and the gentle certainty that healing isn’t just one person’s journey—it’s the whole family finding their way back together.

This reunion is proof that recovery isn’t only about leaving old habits behind; it’s about reclaiming love, trust, and the precious bonds that give life meaning. He returns not just as a recovered individual, but as a father ready to show up, to listen, and to build a new, steady life rooted in presence and care.

Dear Interns,

On behalf of the administration, staff, and residents of Balay Silangan Reformation Center, we are writing to extend our deepest and most sincere gratitude to you for choosing our facility as your clinical training site, and for the dedication, compassion, and hard work you have shown throughout your internship.

We are truly honored that you selected Balay Silangan as the setting for your practical application of psychological knowledge. Over the course of your stay, you have gone far beyond fulfilling academic requirements: you brought fresh perspectives, genuine empathy, and unwavering commitment to every individual you worked with. Your willingness to listen without judgment, your careful attention to each case, and your respectful approach toward our residents have made a meaningful difference in their journey toward recovery and reformation.

We recognize that working in a reformation setting brings unique challenges, and we commend you for facing these with professionalism, patience, and an open heart. The time and effort you invested in assessments, counseling sessions, group activities, and research have not only enriched your own learning experience but have also strengthened our programs and brought new hope to those we serve. You have proven that psychology is not just a field of study—it is a powerful tool for healing, understanding, and building better lives.

We also wish to thank the City College of Angeles (CCA) for nurturing students of such character and competence. We hope that your time with us has been as rewarding and enlightening for you as it has been for our center and our residents. May the lessons you learned here, and the connections you made, guide you as you move forward in your careers and help you grow into the remarkable mental health professionals we know you will become.

Once again, on behalf of our OIC Mr Richard Alan E. Saul and Balay Silangan Staff, thank you for choosing Balay Silangan, for sharing your talents, and for caring deeply. We wish you all the very best in your final academic requirements and your future endeavors. You have a bright future ahead, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact you will make in the world.

With warm appreciation and highest regards,

The Program Directors and Balay Silangan Staff

GROUP DYNAMICS: CUPS AND STICK RELAY

Aim:
To visually and physically demonstrate how relying too heavily on an unstable, rigid connection (the straw) to manage or carry another person's responsibilities (the cup) creates anxiety, loss of control, and instability highlighting the need for internal stability and clean boundaries.

Purpose:
In this activity, participants will learn that helping a teammate cannot involve physically forcing or fixing their positioning. True care means holding your own position steady and letting the other person meet you halfway, rather than enabling them by trying to control their "straw."The game highlights how the anxious rush to please others and avoid letting the team down creates a frantic energy that causes relationships and the cup to drop.

Breaking the Cycle of Codependency

Aim:
To help participants understand codependency, recognize unhealthy relationship patterns such as people-pleasing and enabling, and encourage them to build healthy boundaries and internal self-worth as part of their recovery journey.

Purpose:
To educate participants about the importance of developing healthy relationships, making responsible decisions, and valuing themselves without depending on the approval of others. This discussion also aims to help them strengthen their recovery by promoting self-awareness, healthy boundaries, and personal responsibility.

GROUP DYNAMICS 2ND ACTIVITY
Agawan Panyo

Purpose:
This game shows how people react differently when they're excited, nervous, or under pressure. Some players wait for the right timing, while others just go for it right away. This is meant to relate to how anger works too — sometimes we act too fast without thinking, and sometimes it's better to pause and plan first before doing anything.

Aim:
To help clients practice self-control and timing when reacting to a triggering situation, instead of just acting on impulse. It also gives them a chance to reflect on their own "style" of reacting when they feel pressured or upset — whether they tend to freeze, rush in, or think first — so they can start being more mindful of how they respond to anger.

GROUP DYNAMICS 1ST ACTIVITY
Heads, Shoulders, Knees, Toes → Grab the Cup

Purpose:
This game is used to help clients see how anger doesn't just happen all at once — it builds up little by little. The activity starts slow and controlled, then speeds up, kind of like how a person might stay calm at first but then suddenly react once things pile up. It's a simple way to show the "buildup" part of anger before it explodes into an impulsive reaction.

Aim:
To help clients notice the early signs of anger in their body (like a faster heartbeat or tense muscles) before it turns into an impulsive action. The main goal is for them to realize that catching these signs early can help them pause and choose a better response instead of just reacting right away, like grabbing the cup without thinking.

The Anatomy of Anger: From Reaction to Response

AIM:
The aim of this discussion is to help participants understand the nature of anger, recognize their personal anger triggers and warning signs, and learn healthy ways to respond instead of reacting impulsively.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this discussion is to help participants become more aware of how anger develops and how it affects their thoughts, emotions, behavior, and relationships. We want to encourage participants to identify their triggers, practice healthy coping strategies, and develop self-control so they can respond to anger in a calm and constructive way, supporting their recovery journey.
