A quiet life of simplicity can still change history. Today, we celebrate Gen. Miguel Malvar Day.

As the Superior Commander of Southern Luzon, Gen. Malvar held incredible power, yet his strength was rooted in his humility and stewardship of the land. He didn't hide in fortresses; he defended the country from the towering b**a trees of Mount Makiling. To evade his enemies, he didn't rely on grand disguises-he simply blended in with the people he served. Wanted posters from 1901 described him wearing an "indian shirt and trousers cut off or rolled up to the knees" and riding a carabao with a rooster under his arm. His ability to affect being a very simple native allowed him to pass through heavily guarded areas completely undetected. With his humble leadership, he was instrumental in ending the long and difficult Philippine-American War.

As the grandfather of Lolo Toto, his values of courage, conviction, and simple living have been passed down through his family.

Today, we honor a man who proved that you can hold great power while still walking gently on the earth.

Thank you Lolo Miguel! Happy, happy birthday!

We are often told to want more, do more, and fill every available space. But perhaps a full life requires the exact opposite. 🔀

When we strip away the excess, we regain our attention. We begin to rediscover the beautiful art of noticing. 👀 Suddenly, the world opens up—we appreciate the quiet details we used to rush past, we find deeper gratitude in simple moments, and we experience true presence.

Having less doesn't mean being empty. It frees us to finally recognize the abundance and enough we already have.

Practice the art of noticing at our nature reserve.

"Nature Based Play (NBP) is accorded a crucial role in all domains of early childhood development, including physical activity, cognitive learning, as well as social and emotional development." 💯

RESEARCH | The rapid urbanization and domination of concrete landscapes in cities diminish children’s access to natural environments and traditional outdoor play. These sedentary and technology-driven activities raise concerns about the potential consequences for child development.

This study aims to explore the lived experiences of teachers in a child development center (CDC) in implementing nature-based play (NBP) and how urbanization and decreasing green spaces in developing countries impact NBP. Using multiple case studies in the Philippines, the study interviewed teachers from a child development laboratory and applied narrative analysis.

Results showed that the teachers perceived NBP as a form of play that happens in the natural environment, involves natural elements, is unstructured, and aids in learning. Moreover, NBP is accorded a crucial role in all domains of early childhood development, including physical activity, cognitive learning, as well as social and emotional development. However, weather disturbances, safety concerns, increasing teacher workloads, and the expansion of urban infrastructure reduce natural and green spaces and challenge NBP implementation.

Findings provide recommendations for more inclusive development by incorporating green spaces in urban planning and design, as well as community participation in NBP for more holistic and resilient child development.
