PRESS RELEASE | NBI ISSUES COMMENDATION HONORING BUREAU PERSONNEL

Pasay City – On July 27, 2026, during the Monday Flag Ceremony, NBI Director Atty. Melvin A. Matibag commended agents of the NBI-Violence Against Women and Children Division (VAWCD), NBI-Central Visayas Regional Office (CEVRO), and NBI-Cebu District Office (CEBDO) for their successful operations.

Director Matibag praised NBI-VAWCD agents for meticulous case preparation and tireless law enforcement, which led to favorable court judgments in two significant operations. He highlighted how their dedication and thoroughness contributed to successful legal outcomes. He also acknowledged the valuable assistance from the NBI-Digital Forensic Laboratory Division (DFLD) and NBI-Tarlac District Office (TARDO) teams during these operations, emphasizing the importance of inter-unit collaboration in achieving shared objectives.

The Director also praised the efforts of NBI-CEVRO and NBI-CEBDO agents for their recent coordinated operation in Mandaue and Cebu City. This operation led to the successful seizure of eleven (11) 40-foot container vans stored with smuggled ci******es, with an estimated value of Php 813,000.00. Additionally, NBI-CEBDO agents received commendation for their role in confiscating twenty-five (25) 20-foot container vans also containing smuggled ci******es, valued at approximately Php 980,000.00.

Also, on July 20, 2026, Director Matibag commended the agents of NBI-SAU for their successful operation that led to the seizure of a substantial volume of smuggled onions and ci******es. The Director also presided over the historic awarding of the inaugural NBI Shield of Bravery to Agent Francisco of the NBI-OTCD in recognition of his exemplary courage during an incident that occurred on May 13, 2026, in the GSIS building.

Director Matibag said that these awards recognize and honor dedicated NBI agents who consistently demonstrate exemplary service in their duties. Each week, selected agents will be acknowledged for their outstanding contributions, underscoring their commitment to the agency and the public. He added that this initiative aims to motivate all personnel to strive for excellence and uphold the NBI's values.

𝗣𝗨𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗖 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧

The National Bureau of Investigation has taken note of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s remarks referring to NBI Director Melvin A. Matibag as a “minion.”

No one in the Bureau will take offense at the label, nor will it be answered in kind. The Bureau’s work rests on evidence, on documents, and on the law — and none of these is moved by name-calling.

The Director answers to no one’s interest but the public’s. The inquiry into the conduct and financing of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games was opened for a single reason: billions in public funds appear to have been disbursed outside the ordinary safeguards of competitive bidding and government audit, and the Filipino people are entitled to know how their money was spent. That question stands regardless of who asks it or who is discomfited by it.

It bears noting that the loudest objections to an audit seldom come from those with nothing to account for. When a position cannot be defended with facts, it is often defended with insults. The Bureau reads the Senator’s choice of words in exactly that light - and proceeds undeterred.

The NBI’s inquiry is impartial, evidence-based, and grounded squarely in its mandate under the law. It presumes no one guilty and exempts no one from scrutiny. We invite anyone with knowledge of the matter — the Senator included — to bring their evidence to the Bureau, and not to a livestream.

Director Matibag will continue to do the work the Filipino people expect of him. He may be called many things. Beholden will never be one of them.

In a personal letter to Director Matibag, Director Patel extended his gratitude for the NBI’s outstanding assistance in the successful deportation of an FBI Top Ten Most Wanted fugitive allowing the United States to proceed with prosecution. The FBI Director recognized not only the results delivered but also the relentless commitment and partnership behind them.

This reflects a growing bond between two bureaus and two directors who share a common resolve: that no fugitive should escape accountability, and that cooperation between nations is the surest path to justice.

Under the leadership of Director Matibag and Director Patel, the NBI and the FBI continue to build a partnership rooted in trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to the rule of law across borders.

Two bureaus. One purpose. Justice without borders.
