Thousands of Filipino men, women and children died in the liberation, which is remembered as the "Battle of Manila."

The beautiful city was destroyed. Buildings were reduced to rubble, schools and churches burned to the ground. Heritage sites, like the University of Sto. Tomas campus, were used to hold civilians, and were also damaged in the battle.
