🏙️ 2026 Case Study: Naga City

Using Naga City as its case study, ROOTWORK brings together landscape architects, architects, environmental planners, civil engineers, allied professionals, local government representatives, and other participants interested in NbS to examine real urban and environmental challenges and explore how natural systems and green infrastructure can contribute to more livable, resilient, and sustainable communities.
Participants will work through site analysis, mapping exercises, interdisciplinary discussions, and collaborative planning to develop strategies and recommendations responsive to Naga City’s local conditions and opportunities.

Why does BAGUIO Flood during rainy season? Because we narrowed down our water ways, polluted it and concreted the base, we kept on making these mistakes all over Baguio, and yet we wonder why we still get flooded despite our terrain…Sigh!

Why do city rivers always flood so fast and look so dead?

For decades, we "fixed" city creeks by trapping them in straight, steep concrete pipes. This creates high-speed water slides that blast deadly floodwaters downstream and wipe out local fish and wildlife. But ecological engineers are breaking the concrete and putting the curves back into our waterways using Naturalized Urban Creek Meander Reconstruction!

Here is how we bring dead urban rivers back to life:
1️. The Curves: We rebuild the natural, winding bends of the river. This forces the water to travel further, acting like a natural brake to slow down dangerous flood speeds.
2️. The Boulders & Timber: We use large anchored tree roots and natural stone to protect the banks from erosion while creating deep underwater pools for fish to live and hide.
3️. The Floodplain: We give the river room to breathe, building terraced, plant-filled banks that safely absorb excess water during massive storms instead of flooding city streets.

We are turning dangerous concrete ditches back into thriving, beautiful urban rivers!

May mga pamilyang ngayong oras ay naghihintay pa rin ng balita.

Thirteen individuals were buried after a landslide struck three houses in Guisad Surong, Baguio City Sunday evening.

Four have been confirmed dead. Three were rescued and are now receiving treatment. Six remain missing as search and retrieval operations continue.

Patuloy ring dumarating ang karagdagang pwersa mula sa BFP, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Army, police, CDRRMO, barangay officials, at iba pang responders.

Habang marami sa atin ay ligtas na naghihintay ng updates, sila ay nasa gitna ng putik, ulan, pagod, at panganib--still searching, still hoping.

Behind every number is a person.

May pamilyang nawalan.
May pamilyang naghihintay.
At may mga responder na ayaw sumuko.

Lord, comfort the families who are grieving. Give strength to those still waiting for their loved ones, and protect every responder working on the ground.
