The Rationalization Plan of the government as embodied in EO 366 had clustered the regional offices of the Ecosystems Research and Development Service (ERDS) (CAR, I,II, and III) into WWRRDEC as one of the Research Centers of ERDB. WWRRDEC focuses on Research, Development and Extension services on watershed and water resources not only within its coverage regions but also in other regions of the country.

The Presidential Proclamation No. 760 signed by former President Benigno S. Aquino officially declared January as Zero Waste Month.

According to National Solid Waste Commission, around 21 million metric tons of solid waste is generated in 2020. Effective waste management starts with waste avoidance, followed by what is popularly known as the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle).

The next step is to adopt environmentally sound treatment and alternative technologies to recover valuable materials from waste. In doing so, only a small amount of residuals will need to be disposed of in sanitary landfill disposal sites as prescribed by law.

Zero waste is ultimately a lifestyle so everyone has a choice. We hope itโ€™s not too late to add in everyoneโ€™s new yearโ€™s resolution! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Stay tuned every Friday for !

The Balanga City Nature and Wetland Park in Bataan is a newly declared special eco-tourism zone under Republic Act No. 11365 of 2019. It covers some 15 hectares of mangrove forests and 18.7 hectares of foreshore that faces the northern part of Manila Bay.

The park's development was a part of the provincial government's integrated coastal management (ICM) strategy in partnership with the DENR and the Partnership in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) to protect the coastal and marine resources, and ensuring growth and development.

This wetlang area is situated within an estuary at the mouth of Talisay River draining into Manila Bay. The thick mangrove forests, grassland and rich wetland makes this ecosystem a regular nesting and breeding ground of migratory birds. At least 80 species of migratory birds can be seen in the area such as little egrets, purple herons, brahminy kites, peregrine falcon, chestnut-checked starling, white-breasted and waterhens, rufous-necked stint, grey heron and species of kingfishers, flowerpeckers and sandpipers. In 2017, over 25,000 birds were observed in this important habitat. And since 2013, the local government of Balanga is holding the "Ibong Dayo" festival to promote the importance and protection of migratory birds and wetland areas.

Help us protect our Migratory Birds and Wetlands to sustain ecological balance.

The more than 100-hectare Uacon Lake is a famous ecotourism destination in the town of Candelaria in Zambales province. The lakeโ€™s water comes from the mountains of Zambales and empties into the West Philippine Sea through a two-kilometer-long river.

This lake is surrounded by several ecosystems like forests, caves, rivers, estuaries and mangroves, which makes it as home for several flora and fauna. Uacon lake is also a fish sanctuary that hosts numerous fish and marine species such as talakitok, groupers, milkfish, crabs and shrimp.

Help us protect our Lakes and Rivers so that it may continuously provide us with food, livelihood, and aesthetic and recreational values.

The more than 30-kilometer Camiling River traverses the towns of Mayantoc, Camiling, San Clemente, Santa Ignacia in the provinces of Tarlac and Mangatarem town in Pangasinan. Its head waters are located at Barangay Labney near the eastern slope of Zambales mountain range and joins the Agno river channel then drains into Lingayen Gulf.

Camiling river is known for its pristine waters and is a famous tourist spot during summer season. It feeds water to the Magsaysay Dam irrigating the rice fields of northwestern Tarlac, and benefitting more than 10,000 farmers in the area. It is also a source of water for domestic use of local communities.

The river being surrounded by lush and dense forests is a home to diverse flora and fauna including wild raspberries and the endemic Philippine jade vine and is home to the Whiskered treeswift, Balicassiao, Common palm civet, Murid rodents and the endemic Philippine magpie-robin and Indigo-banded kingfisher. The forest areas surrounding the river is also an important nesting and feeding ground of the vulnerable Philippine warty pig.

Help us protect our Forests and Rivers so that it may continuously provide us with food, livelihood and other ecosystem services like clean air and water.

The Giant Bamboo, scientific ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, can be easily distinguished because of its massive culms and purple shoots. It can reach a height of over 24 meters before the bamboo itself begins to gracefully bow. It has a diameter of up to 14 cm. Its nodes, however, are distinctly swollen, reaching up to 35 cm in diameter with the lowest ones containing aerial roots.

This bamboo species is widely used for heavy construction and furniture making. It has the equivalent tensile strength of steel and, when properly treated can last a lifetime. It can be propagated through culm or branch cutting. It is widely used in the DENRโ€™s reforestation programs, especially in areas like Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Bulacan and Tarlac.

Our bamboo species may be the key to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Planting and protecting more of our bamboo species will help reduce the effects of global warming and climate change including the stabilization of river banks. It also serves as home for our wildlife species.

Help us protect our environment by keeping our bamboo #๐—ช๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ๐—”๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—”๐—น๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ. Pinagkukunan ng pakinabang, ating pangalagaan dahil ikaw, ako, #๐™๐™–๐™ฎ๐™ค๐˜ผ๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™†๐™–๐™ก๐™ž๐™ ๐™–๐™จ๐™–๐™ฃ. ๐Ÿ’š
