The Cordillera office of the National Nutrition Council (NNC-CAR) urged the public to as much as possible refrain from a sedentary lifestyle to avoid contracting life-threatening illnesses that might result to untimely death in the future.
The NNC-CAR stated that a sedentary lifestyle is linked to insufficient physical activity and prolonged sitting, or the so-called sedentary behavior.
Further, a sedentary lifestyle is linked to a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and metabolic disorders.
The NNC-CAR noted that physical inactivity is one of the leading risk factors for non-communicable diseases and that insufficiently active people have a 20-30 percent increase risk of death compared to those sufficiently active.
On the other hand, the NN-CAR pointed out that sedentary behavior and unhealthy diet often cluster together, which means that the risk is higher if both poor diet and inactivity are present in the lifestyle of people.
However, the NNC-Car claimed that it is not enough for people to just increase their physical activity to mitigate such risk, but the same must also be supported by diet for better metabolic health, which will guarantee improved body weight and cardiovascular health.
The NNC-CAR reminded the public that with the prolonged holidays following the declaration of the Office of the President for additional special holidays until the first days of 2026, people must not forget to be engaged in various forms of physical activities that will allow them to burn the increased fat, salt and sugar that they were able to store because of the excessive eating that they have been undergoing following the numerous conduct of parties and gatherings to celebrate Christmas and New Year.
