34 LGUs receive cash assistance from EMB
The Environmental Management Bureau- Department of Environment and Natural Resources (EMB- DENR CAR) identified 34 LGU’s of CAR that received cash assistance for the establishment of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and procurement of a solid waste management equipment.
Pursuant to the relevant provisions of the Local Government Code of 1991, (RA 7160) Local Government Units (LGU’s) are primarily responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the provisions of Republic Act 9003 (RA 9003) or known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Section eight of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 mandates the DENR to provide support to the LGU’s in the development and implementation of Local Solid Waste Management plans and programs.
A Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is a facility that will receive waste for final sorting according to its type for composting recycling. It shall be designed to receive mixed waste for final sorting, segregation, composting and recycling. The resulting residual wastes shall be transferred to a long term storage or disposal facility.
In line with this, the following LGU’s received the amount of Php 435, 000.00, Bucay, Manabo, Pidigan, Tayum, Bucloc, Penarrubia, La Paz, Danglas, Tineg, Lacub, Luba, Lagayan, San Quintin, Malibcong, Daguioman, Lagangilang, Villaviciosa of the province of Abra (15) Pudtol, Calanasan, Luna of the province of Apayao (3), Tublay, Itogon, Kabayan, Kapangan, Tuba of the Province of Benguet (5), Lamut, Hingyon, Kiangan of the province of Ifugao (3), Barlig, Bauko, Tadian, Besao of the Mt. Province (4) and Pinukpuk, Kalinga (1).
Whilst LGU Malibcong and Bucloc, Abra together with LGU Aguinaldo, Ifugao received the amount of Php 475, 000.00.
EMB RD Reynaldo S. Digamo during the MOA signing and turnover ceremony held on March 16, 2018 at Fortune Restaurant stressed the importance of establishing an MRF and operating it to increase waste diversion, proper segregation at source and segregated collection.
