Every year, we dedicate a day to the names etched into our history. We celebrate their courage, and tell their stories as though heroism has always been easy to recognize.
But history is rarely that simple.
For every hero whose name survived, there are countless others whose contributions were never recorded. The farmer who fed a community through difficult times. The worker who kept a family afloat. The ordinary Filipino who stood up, spoke out, helped another, or simply refused to surrender hope.
Perhaps we have made heroism too grand.
We look for heroes in statues, battlefields, and history books, when sometimes they exist quietly in the lives of people who never expected recognition.
National Heroes Day, then, is the time to ponder and ask whose stories have we failed to remember?
Because a nation does not become great solely through the extraordinary people it celebrates. It is also built by the ordinary people history almost forgot.
