Tara na, tarlac!!!
21/02/2024

Tara na, tarlac!!!

Tarlaqueños, be proud of the legacy of patriotism, courage under fire, and a never-say-die spirit of your ancestors!

Like our countrymen from Bataan and Pampanga, the WWII freedom fighters from Tarlac gave their all until the very end. This was never more evident than in the Battle of Bataan, which saw the courage of thousands of Filipino soldiers and their American allies resist the invasion of Japanese forces for three months. In the aftermath of the battle and the ensuing, terrible Death March, many of the survivors from Tarlac summoned the will to fight once more and joined the guerilla movement known as the Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon (Hukbalahap).

The gallantry of the Huks during the war was the stuff of legend. Because of its successful raids, the Japanese never gained full control of Tarlac province. By war’s end, the Hukbalahap had 1,200 enemy engagements, and became the most successful anti-Japanese resistance army of the Second World War. That courage is alive and well today.

We invite the sons and daughters of the proud province of Tarlac to join us and walk in the footsteps of our WWII heroes who suffered, died, and survived the Bataan Death March.

Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB), in partnership with Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) and the Department of National Defense (DND), will host Freedom March 2024, a 160-KM commemorative walk to honor the heroes of World War II. The march will start at Kilometer Zero in Mariveles, Bataan, all the way to San Fernando Pampanga, and end at Capas National Shrine in Tarlac.

Registration is FREE and is open until February 29, 2024. Pre-registration is required and you may scan the QR code or click this link: https://forms.gle/w6BJTdyY7fA64LCV8.

Parade for our heroes, Pampanga!!!

To our countrymen from the province of Pampanga, you are no strangers to gallantry!

Under Spanish rule, your birthplace was one of the first provinces to fight for our independence. Come the Second World War, courage ran through the veins of your ancestors proud and strong. Many of the fighters of the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), hailed from your land. During the Battle of Bataan, thousands of Pampangueños held the line until the eventual surrender of Allied Forces in April of 1942 that later led to the forcible death march of prisoners of war.

In the aftermath of the fall of Bataan, many Pampangueños joined the Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon (Hukbalahap), or the “People’s Army Against Japan,” and continued the struggle against the Japanese.

The Huks also had fearless and skilled women warriors from Pampanga who even rose to the ranks and became commanding officers. Remedios Guintu Gomez-Paraiso was the daughter of the vice mayor of Mexico, Pampanga, who later became Kumader Liwayway. Simeona Punsalan-Tapang from San Simon, Pampanga became Kumander Guerrero, and later in her life was given a special citation by the Provincial Government of Pampanga for her contribution in attaining freedom for our country.

We invite all Pampangueños to join us and walk in the footsteps of our WWII heroes who suffered, died, and survived the Bataan Death March.

Are you from Bataan? Then you hail from a province which is a birthplace of the brave.

In the history of the Second World War, the Battle of Bataan stands as one of the greatest stories of courage, determination, and grit against overwhelming odds and terrible adversity. Despite a lack of supplies and fighting off disease and hunger, Filipino and American troops held the line against Japanese invaders for three months.

And although the battle ended in defeat, the heroic last stand in Bataan delayed the Japanese advance into Manila by 99 days. It was an amazing display of resilience! The defenders of Bataan were all gallant soldiers. In particular, Sgt. Jose Cabalfin Calugas of the Philippine Scouts became the first Filipino Medal of Honor awardee. The Medal of Honor is America’s highest award for valor in combat.

The Filipino nation stands today, thanks to the sacrifices of the soldiers who fought in the Second World War, most especially in Bataan. As a Bataeño, be proud of the ground you walk on for you walk in the steps of heroes!

Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB), in partnership with Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) and the Department of National Defense (DND), invites you to Freedom March, a 160-KM commemorative walk from Kilometer Zero in Mariveles, Bataan to Capas National Shrine in Tarlac to honor the heroes of World War II.
