After the devastating impact of Typhoon "Julian," the DTI Ilocos Norte, headed by OIC Provincial Director Amelia E. Galvez, conducted price and supply monitoring of basic necessities to ensure that business establishments comply with the price freeze on October 2, 2024, in various supermarkets in Laoag City.

The price control was automatically imposed after the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte declared the province under a State of Calamity (SOC) due to Super Typhoon “Julian” last October 1, 2024.

The said monitoring operation is pursuant to Section 6 of the Republic Act 7581 or the Price Act, prices of basic necessities in an area under a state of calamity shall be automatically frozen at their prevailing prices for a period of 60 days unless sooner lifted. Basic necessities include canned sardines, canned & powdered milk, instant coffee, bottled water, iodized salt, instant noodles, laundry soap, and candles.

Monitoring results showed that prices remain stable, and there is a sufficient supply of BNPCs around the area. Meanwhile, the public is encouraged to stay informed and to report any concerns regarding prices and availability of goods. Together, we can help prevent unreasonable price increases and ensure that the public has access to sufficient and affordable food supply in the event of a typhoon.
