TRAFFIC MEASURES SET FOR 2026 BAR EXAMS IN CEBU CITY

Traffic management measures will be implemented around the University of San Jose-Recoletos Basak Campus during the 2026 Bar Examinations on September 6, 9, and 13.

An examinee lane will be in place from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on all examination days. Motorists and commuters are advised to plan ahead, take alternative routes, and follow the instructions of traffic enforcers in the area.

CEBU AIR QUALITY ALERT: AQI HITS 203, OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES DISCOURAGED

Metro Cebu is currently recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 203, placing our air in the 𝘼𝙘𝙪𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙐𝙣𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚 (𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙖𝙮'𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙨).

High levels of fine particulate matter PM2.5 make spending time outdoors risky for everyone right now.

😷 Wear N95/KN95 Masks: Standard cloth or surgical masks do not filter fine haze particles. Use a well-fitted respirator mask if you must step outside.

🛑 Avoid Outdoor Workouts: Reschedule outdoor activities, running, or heavy physical labor until air levels improve.

LTO: AUTHORITY TO USE REQUIRED FOR TEMPORARY, IMPROVISED PLATES

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) reminds motorists that those using temporary or improvised plates must secure an Authority to Use to make their plates legal.

Starting October 1, 2026, strict enforcement of Memorandum Circular No. MVL-2026-5314 will begin, with violators facing a ₱5,000 fine and possible confiscation or impoundment of their vehicles.

The LTO has given motorists a 30-day extension from September 1 to secure the required Authority to Use before the strict enforcement takes effect.

LAGMAY: POOR PLANNING FUELED RECURRING FLOODS

UP Resilience Institute and NOAH Center Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay says poor urban planning and the development of designated floodplains have contributed to the country’s recurring flooding problems. He noted that cities like Cebu had master plans decades ago that preserved green spaces along rivers, but these areas were later built over, reducing natural spaces that could temporarily hold excess water.

PISTON Cebu Calls to Remove VAT and Excise Tax to Substantially Lower Oil Prices!

Drivers and supporters troop to the Shell Gas Station at Carreta, Cebu City to protest the piecemeal rollback in oil prices.

Although this Tuesday will be marked with a few pesos in rollback, drivers have noted that the price range of diesel and ga*oline remain in the ₱70 to ₱90 range. This means most of the drivers' earnings will go to the oil companies instead of their respective families.

Instead of considering the demand for the removal of oil taxes which will bring down oil prices by ₱20, the government has offered palliatives. But drivers have complained not all have received the fuel subsidy. Not all gas stations can offer the fuel discount, while multicabs used as jeepneys do not have this kind of support.

Hence, PISTON Cebu reiterates its calls for the Marcos Jr. government to immediately lower the prices of fuel to affordable levels; remove the VAT and Excise Tax; junk the Oil Deregulation Law; increase fares alongside the wage hikes for workers; take steps to nationalize the oil industry; and contribute efforts for a cessation of the US-led war in the Middle East.

TALISAY AIR QUALITY DECLARED ‘VERY UNHEALTHY’ AMID HAZE

The DENR Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-7) has reported “very unhealthy” air quality in Talisay City this Tuesday, September 1, amid haze observed in several parts of Cebu, and advised the public to wear masks outdoors, limit prolonged outdoor activities, and stay updated through official DENR air-quality reports.
