The Philippines continues to face a learning crisis that demands collective action. According to the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022, Filipino learners scored 347 points in reading, ranking 75th out of 80 participating countries and economies in reading performance. Moreover, only 24% of Filipino students reached at least the minimum proficiency level (Level 2) in reading, compared with the OECD average of 74%. These findings underscore the urgent need to strengthen foundational literacy across our communities.
In Barangay Guiwanon, this challenge is reflected in our own data. The BOSY 2026 Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA) revealed that none of the 34 Grade 1 learners assessed were Grade-Level Ready, reinforcing the importance of early literacy intervention.
Now on its third week, BASA KITA continues to bring together youth volunteers, teachers, parents, and community partners to help our young learners strengthen their reading skills one child, one book, and one session at a time.
Every reading session is more than teaching letters and words. It is about building comprehension, confidence, curiosity, and the lifelong ability to learn. Literacy empowers children to think critically, evaluate information, and actively participate in society.
To our dedicated volunteers, thank you for choosing to invest your time in our learners. Your service is helping build not only better readers but also a stronger and more informed community.
📢 We are still welcoming flexible volunteers!
Whether you are an education student, an aspiring teacher, a college student, a working professional with available time, or simply someone who believes every child deserves the opportunity to read, you are invited to become part of BASA KITA. Even a few hours of your time can make a meaningful difference in a child's learning journey.
