LOST NO MORE 🌿

A rare plant species last recorded in the 1890s has been rediscovered within the limestone forests of the Masungi Georeserve in Rizal, marking its first verified sighting in over 130 years.

Scientists from the University of the Philippines Diliman and the Philippine Normal University confirmed the rediscovery of Exacum loheri in a research note published in the Philippine Journal of Science.

Researchers unexpectedly encountered the plant while conducting a snail reconnaissance study within Masungi’s “600 Steps” area in Baras and Tanay, Rizal.

The species is considered highly unusual because it lacks chlorophyll and cannot produce its own food through photosynthesis. Instead, it survives through a rare symbiotic relationship with fungi, allowing it to thrive in Masungi’s humus-rich limestone forests.

According to the researchers, Masungi Georeserve currently hosts the only known living population of Exacum loheri in the wild, making the rediscovery significant for Philippine biodiversity and conservation efforts.

The species was originally collected by Swiss botanist August Loher in 1895 and had since remained undocumented in the wild for more than a century.

GROWING A FOREST 🌳

Thousands of narra trees have already been planted by rangers, visitors, and partners at the Masungi Geopark Project.

Slow-growing, resilient, and built for the long view, these young trees can be easy to overlook. But in 10 to 15 years, if the restoration work is sustained amid efforts to curtail it, these same slopes could be shaded by flowering canopies we can only begin to imagine today.

These restoration areas are quietly becoming something that can outlast us. Our hope is that they will be perpetually protected from destructive projects, now and in the future.

But that future will not sustain itself. It depends on continuity, community, and care that goes far beyond planting day.

We ask for everyone’s help to keep this effort alive.
